Very interesting read. Perhaps uses the phrase "vast right wing conspiracy" a little too much.

Okay - will try more but the story is not holding me. Bad things but without the interest of being deep or dark

Saw this at the UMich library, leafed through it. Looked intriguing. Some months later, checked it out from the UC library. It's a good book. A little bit loosely organized -- some parts feel like they were previously published as essays. Overall, it has the dual virtues of being short and meaty. I learned a lot, and it put a lot of things more sharply in focus.

Number two in my recent Malcolm Gladwell spree. Enjoyable as always, though I do find I go on binges of authors I enjoy and begin to regret it after a while... sort of like being 3/4 of the way through a pint of ice cream and you just finish it because you already ate 75% of it, but you would have enjoyed it a lot more if you'd waited until the next night. I've done the same thing recently with Kazuo Ishiguro and Haruki Murakami. I think the vast majority of authors really only have books in them that are variations on a theme. That's why I'm so impressed with Zadie Smith (3 very different books) and David Mitchell (3 similar books and a new book that was very different [black swan green:]). At any rate, Gladwell uses this book as his plea for rational problem solving: if people are making the wrong decisions, then we should change the circumstances in which they make decisions and not mandate that they make different decisions. The best example of that idea was the problem of women in world class orchestras. Having noted that there were very few women in major orchestras and many talented female musicians, and rather than mandate that 50% of spots in orchestras go to women, most major orchestras have instituted blind auditions in which the conductor hears but does not see the musician. After a few years, the problem was solved. Extraneous information was removed and the correct decisions were made. A valuable lesson. Again, I'm glad that Malcolm Gladwell plays a significant role in the public discourse.

Great historic lessons and examples of how one small decision (good or bad) has changed the course of history and cultures. Same concept as a tipping point, great book and I highly recommend it.

First time I've read this series. It was an easy read and an interesting story, but it's very similar to many others in this genre. Reminded me of Janet Evanovich without the humor

This is a tough book to read, but worth it to see how the Commedia ends.

In my review of "The Long-Legged House," I said that book would be the best introduction to Wendell Berry's essays for those who know him mostly through his fiction. With this book, the door swings in the opposite direction. In fact, the two volumes are complementary, because of those early essays, I believe the character of Jayber Crow is Berry's fictional counterpart. This is a more outward-facing book than many of the other Port William stories I've read. Because Jayber is somewhat an outsider, he looks more objectively at the town and its people. But he also has his own inward struggles with love and religion, and the chapters that focus on these are, to me, the most beautiful. I think "The Memory of Old Jack" is still my favorite Wendell Berry novel, but this is close behind.
