found this a really interesting read. the narrow focus of this book may frustrate some people (like me, at times), but frederick does a good job of showing how the magazine format could encourage some readings while discouraging or limiting others. liked how she also pays attention to the commercial side of things. i finished the book with more questions than i had when i started, but i think this is probably a good thing, too. one major issue i wish she could have addressed: how gendered/class discourse on "women's magazines" intersects with that of "mass magazines" (like modan nihon), esp. in the early 1930s.

This book was phenomenal. The reader can truly identify and sympathize with new agent Kimberly Quincy. Her struggle to deal with the vicious murders of her sister and mother aligns with the Eco-Killer's case. You respect her for her strength and feel sorry at her moments of weakness. The abduction of the girls and struggles of Tina and Nora Ray are captivating. The clues the Eco-Killer leaves lead you to guess where these girls are hidden. The revelation of who the Eco-Killer is was an interesting twist to the plot as well. The best part of the book had to be the interesting, not so orthodox relationship between Mac and Kimberly. Mac is such a compelling character, by far my favorite in this book. I can't wait to read other books by Lisa Gardner.

Oh dear....I have to say I did not connect to this story line. I never give up on a book, if I did, I would have stopped reading by page 50. So, I basically skimmed the book in reading it...only reading the quotes. I could not get myself interested in the plot of this story which consisted of a girl who flees her family to attend an anti vamp "kick their ass" school. Basically, vamps have taken over the world and there are a select few young humans, who go to the school to train, who fight them off and save humanity. One of her classmates is a vamp and pro human and fights with the team and he & the girl fall in love.

I love this story. It did take me a little while to get sucked into the story at first. But once it did, I hated putting it down. Very thoughtful and emotional read. I like that she shows a light at the end of the tunnel, the end of the world. And how wonderful it is to be us, complicated, confusing, good and bad, full of love, hate, and hope. Human. I look forward to more "adult novels" by Stephenie Meyer.

The beginning of the book was really slow. I almost gave up. But it really gained momentum towards the middle and became much more interesting and engaging. Not as solid of a book at Wicked, but still an enjoyable read.

Can I mention (again) how much I love Jackson Pearce? I knew I'd enjoy this book and when I started reading it I became hooked! It started off right away into the mystery of Gretchen, Ansel, and their sister and doesn't stop until the last page. The writing was awesome as usual, her style is very easy and before you know it you've read fifty pages! The characters were vulnerable yet independent, and there was something very whimsical about the town and the novel overall. Gretchen and Samuel's relationship was good, though I feel like the interaction could've used some work. I wanted to know more about them. I'm hoping there will be a sequel to this one! I can't WAIT for Fathomless which is a retelling of The Little Mermaid! Yes please!!
