I've enjoyed all of Jon Krakauer's books, and he's probably received more acclaim for Into Thin Air and maybe Under the Banner of Heaven. But in my mind this is his best book. He doesn't editorialize (like he does at times in Into Thin Air and all the time in the Pat Tillman book), instead, he's a journalist who delves into the life of Chris McCandless in this well-researched story. Chris is a free spirit who basically hoboes his way across the country and eventually comes to a bad end because of his wanderlust. My only issue is that there are almost no pictures in this book. One of Chris at the bus in Alaska and that's about it. I found myself turning to that picture a lot while reading, wondering "Why did you go so far?" I experienced my fair share of wanderlust as a youth and I had some friends like Chris, too. Either we were just too smart to get ourselves in that type of situation or maybe we were just lucky; otherwise maybe Krakauer would have written one of our stories.

Robin Becker has bestowed on me a new respect for semi-formalism and, ironically, for lesbian writing, which in my experience is mediocre at best. But Becker writes with professionalism and wisdom, and also with a self-awareness bordering on self-deprecation, saved, though by her mastery of semi-formalism, her willingness to flirt with imagistic and linear sentimentality. I agree with what, I think, Richard Hugo said: if you are not risking sentimentality, you are not close to you inner self. This closeness to self, to all human selves, is the attractiveness of Becker's poetry--her unblinking honesty, her fearless intimacy, which includes her explicit lesbian references. I want, though, to differentiate her from the genre of "lesbian literature." Said genre has acquired to the connotations of pure eroticism or extreme affirmation to the detriment of literary quality. Becker is first a poet and connects that thread of attention to me in a way few "lesbian authors" can.

I don't read "historical fiction". That is, I didn't until I read this book. It completely blew my mind. Two boyhood friends become rivals, then enemies in 19th century Europe. It sounds simple enough. But what I loved about this book was the incredible complexity the author layered into this tale. Part mystery, part a study in the evolution of psychological obsession, this book is steeped in historical information which makes it completely believable. If you didn't already understand how things were in Victorian times, you would still be able to understand this book thanks to copious footnotes. The author spent 10 years researching and writing this book, and his work definitely pays off in the story. Sadly, I am simply not a great enough writer to adequately explain to you just how great this book is. If you like complex mysteries and/or psychological analysis of true crime, then it is highly likely you will love this book!
