With a happy sigh I completed this book. Never has a book been so relaxing and delightful to read. The descriptions of the English countryside are vibrant and vivid; I found myself wishing I was there. Cassandra Mortmain is our first-person storyteller, and so endearing and sympathetic. I wanted to be her friend and rode the tide of her emotions right along beside her as I read. The author's voice is so strongly expressed through her. I saw every other character through her eyes. This book is now numbered among my favorites.

Penny returns to the tiny Quebec village of Three Pines in "A Trick of the Light", a village that doesn't appear on any maps and is populated by quirky, complex and fascinating characters. A murder once again brings Chief Inspector Gamache of Surete homicide and his detectives to town in the seventh book in this excellent series. The police have been to Three Pines often enough to know and even befriend some of the residents. I love going to Three Pines to visit these characters - the solving of the murder is almost secondary - an excuse to jump back into the ongoing lives of the detectives and the residents. (read these books in order to really get into their lives). The book before this one, "Bury Your Dead", was well-written but was primarily focused on a murder in Quebec City and I discovered that I felt a little cheated with the briefer storyline of events in Three Pines. "A Trick of the Light" is one of those books you close at the end with a satisfied sigh and hope that Louise Penny is writing as fast as she can.

Book # 8 of 2010 When did Sookie become religious? I don't think religion was much a part of the story prior to this book but all of the sudden she's praying before she falls asleep and exclaiming "Jesus Christ, Shepard of Judea!"

Great story about living in New Mexico near the end of WWII. Although found in the "Young Adult" section of my local library, I found the protagonist's understanding, dialog, and actions to be that of a much older person.

Neighborhood book club read this and I missed the discussion. I really would have liked to have gone - it was a good choice for book club. I knew nothing about this book, and though the beginning started out a tad bit slow, I quickly became hooked. Then, I worried about my own psychological state as it was somewhat bothersome to me that I liked this book so much. Considering it's all about a whole group of teenagers trying to kill one another, you have to pause and think "What is it about this book that's keeping me so engaged?". I'm choosing to think it's that the characters that are so easy to relate to (some of them possess good qualities that make you want them to succeed), and the ongoing theme of survival against overwhelming odds. Whatever it was that kept me turning page after page, it makes this book addictive. Addictive in a disturbing sense. I'd not recommend it for kids younger than high school age, as some of the scenes really are violent.

Nowhere near as good as She's Come Undone, and half again as long - typical sophomore novel? Still, a powerful story.

One of the few books I've read this year that I simply could not put down. Reminiscent of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, both of which are mentioned in the text. The dual story did not work at times. Margaret's story became too embroiled in emotion, so much so as to make it near impossible to read. Book could have stuck with just Vida Winter and left Margaret as a minor, albeit necessary, character.
