Gabriel Hernandez gabriel_hernandez — I decided I’ve resisted long enough and finally broke down and read Vampire Academy. I’m not a huge fan of YA—yes, I admit I usually hate the teenage angst that seems to come with the genre, but after reading Richelle Mead’s Georgina Kincaid series I decided I had to give Vampire Academy a shot. I’m thrilled I did, I really enjoyed this book. Again, Mead delivers a unique paranormal world that I haven’t ever read before. I expected a book similar to the House of Night Series but this was much better. I love the way she does her world building in bits throughout the book—it keeps it interesting. Some books seem to take chapters in the beginning of a story to lay out the paranormal world but that can get boring. Mead structures it perfectly so you understand everything, but still stay engaged in the story. The characters were fantastic, especially Rose and Dimitri, but even the secondary characters were good. I love that Rose isn’t immature (that’s a pet peeve for me in YA). She takes her job as guardian seriously and she seems older than seventeen. I like the forbidden romance happening between Dimitri and Rose and can’t wait to see what develops next. If anyone else feels the same about YA as I do and have held off reading this book just for that reason, you should definitely give this one a try. It really is worth the read.
