This is one heck of a page-turner. Two completely different people want the same house, both sides deserve the house, both sides desperately want the house, but only one can have it. I'm telling you, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.

Mohsin Hamid also wrote "Moth Smoke," and that brought me to this book--the flashy title could have been ignored. At first, the way he wrote it seemed charming but quickly turned annoying. The story is about a young Pakistani guy who comes to America, goes to Yale, and earns his way to a highly competitive job as a financial analyst. He is in love with an annoying girl. He assimilates and loves his life in America but his outlook changes after September 11. Unfortunately, Hamid doesn't really take care of that transition very well. He leaves it hanging in places. The book hurtles forward giving you the expectation that it will explain how the main character's trajectory changes, but it doesn't give much. While Hamid describes the book as a love story, he makes just enough commentary on America's colonialist attitude (which he writes almost as prose--it's worth cutting out and gluing to...something for future...whatever) and the main character's transition that I can see neo-cons picking it up and renewing their conviction. In other words, he doesn't paint a complete picture--and I don't just mean that he says things I disagree with. It's the book's promise that makes it disappointing--and makes it inflate any previous frustration with assimilation, (how we define) fundamentalism, and colonialism.

This book echoed the beginning of the series where the plot didn't drag on so much like the last one. It was a definite page turner for me and I like the way the series is heading back.

A very satisfying conclusion. The losses may be a bit predictable as are the final choices. And yet one can't fault how it all wraps up because everything has been earned through the course of the series. And then there's this: I'm no warrior and have no desire to be, but if forced, what better banner to fight under than the tattered standard embroidered with Hen Wen, the oracular pig?

Loved this book. Just as good as the first, if not better. Up to the end, you are turning pages as fast as you can. You can see why they are calling this guy the Dan Brown of the European countries. But he's better, and so is the series, in my personal opinion. Can't wait for the third and final installment...and it better be released soon. I already had to have my brother ship this one to me from Asia since its not being released in the US till July.
