Okay..I had such high hopes for this book. I mean it was written by the "voice of the beat generation" for Pete's sake. Total disappointment. I didn't like, kept waiting for something to happen. Blechhh! Kerouac - ptooey! the only reason I give it one star is because it is actually a book and I love books but truly...ew.

Once others find out that you're having a baby, you can expect to be bombarded with the same question ad nauseum: "Are you excited?" Stupid question really (assuming you were trying to conceive in the first place). However, my standard, and most honest answer was "I'm excited to be excited" since there's really no immediate change and it certainly doesn't sink in right away. As corny as it may sound, after reading this book my answer will now be "Yes, I am excited." The author does a wonderful job (for the most part) of establishing just the right tone: neither condescending and pretentiously academic, nor too kitschy and dumbed down. Backed in neuro science and numerous professional studies, his advice is logical and tested. Even the obvious stuff, like "pay attention to your kid" didn't just make me write "No shit" in the margins because the actual science behind it is explained. The latter half of the book, though, did get more and more "touchy feely." Apparently teaching empathy is one of the most important things to do, so I guess the mawkish shift was to be expected. Also, the author just has a really strange need to include irrelevant descriptive details about the scientists whose experiments he describes: "a crusty, wild haired old philosopher" (99) or "a handsome polymath" (135). Finally, there are times when explaining neuroscience via kitchen metaphor work well...there are also times it does not and the two paragraph aside about Bobby Flay ("has red hair and a New York accent" [199]) are completely unnecessary. Overall, though, reading this book made me excited to be a soon-to-be-dad!

Wish I could have rated Corset Diaries higher. It's Good summer "fun read" for lounging by the pool. Premise is a hoot - I like to watch those historical TV "mockumentaries". Wonderful off beat characters. Theres enough substance to balance out silly hijinx. However, I craved additional detail in the journal entries. I closed the book wishing it HAD been a show instead of a book. That's VERY unusual for me.

This is my favorite book so far in the series! The whole thing was a comedy of errors. i loved how all the guys ended up finding mates in the small town. Victor and Ellen are cute!! I'm glad she was an older heroine as well.

I just reread this book. Took only three nights! I reread it for two reasons. The first time I read it I was under the influence of sleep medication, so I forgot most of the book, including the ending. The other reason is that I just received the new Dan Brown book. Five stars again! This book picked up and kept rolling! Unlike Angels & Demons which was basically a rewrite of The Da Vinci Code, this is a new story, with Robert Langdon and a companion running around Washington, DC instead of Rome or Paris. (Looks like he will be running around Florence with a new companion in the new book). Is the subject matter factual? Who cares! It's just a work of fiction. Enjoy it!

I did not make it through this book. Anne Perry's books are generally slow and often dark, BUT the story lines and characters are so compelling that you can't stop reading. However this time it was just slow -and boring. I made it about a third of the way through at which point I found myself totally disengaged and really didn't care how things turned out. I was reading just to get it over with. There are too many good books out there that I'd actually enjoy reading to waste any more of my time on this one, so decided to cut it loose. (To be fair... MAYBE it picked up a little later, I doubt it though!)
