But Remember Their Names is a legal thriller that pits newly-minted Harvard Law graduate Cindy Jakubek against wealthy clients layered behind large stacks of money and still other attorneys protecting conflicting interests, members of the art theft world (and possibly the folks behind the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum heist), art recovery insurance consultants whose methods resemble those of Pittsburg gangbangers, the U.S. Department of Justice, and a weak, self-involved postmodern novelist fiance. On the positive side, Cindy is fiercely loyal to her working class dad, Vince, who runs an over-extended tool business and is biding her time working under the tutelage of Luis Mendez while running out the clock on her deferred hiring date with the aptly-named NYC law firm of Calder & Bull. Unlike her future employers, Mendez has scruples as well as high regard for Cindy's intelligence, professional and personal integrity. The plot is complex enough to keep readers riveted, but sometimes the linking logic--or how Cindy was able to make a connection between seemingly disparate details--is insufficient. As such, you find yourself doing a double-take trying to determine whether you missed something. And no, you didn't. The "whodunnit" part is entirely predictable, and you'll likely guess it on the first page. That's neither important, nor particularly disappointing. Far more intriguing are the little snippets of deals that Cindy suggests--whether proposing hiring strategies in a mock interview, arranging an appeal that clears a deceased client's record and brings his mother some much-needed closure, or helping her Dad to move on after her mother's death. Cindy is an incredibly smart, observant, and resourceful protagonist and I just wanted to understand more clearly how she drew certain connections.

I had started out thinking that at its heart this book was a love story. But it is about so much more than that - love, coming-of-age, death, loss and sorrow. Murakami does an amazing job at putting complicated feelings into words. I loved how he keeps reminding one of the simplest pleasures of life all along the story - beauty of the sunset, walking on a moonlit path, smell of the coffee, freshness of a spring day, caress of a gentle breeze and of course music. It is only fair to give a part of the credit to Jay Rubin for 'the music of the words'. I did miss Muarakmi's bizarre, fantastic imagination. I have read three of his books so far and am amazed at how different an experience it was each time. My fondness for his work just keeps growing. I will close the review with an excerpt from the book where Murakami deftly expresses Toru's great distress at a point in his life where getting through even a single day is a great deal of pain. " Thinking back on the year 1969, all that comes to mind for me is a swamp-a deep, sticky bog that feels as if it's going to suck my shoe off each time I take a step. I walk through the mud, exhausted. In front of me, behind me, I can see nothing but an endless swampy darkness. Time itself slogged along in rhythm with my faltering steps. The people around me had gone on ahead long before, while my time and I hung back, struggling through the mud....."

It was short, but our time together was just wonderful. I don't think it was as focused and fleshed out like Persepolis, but I don't fault Marjane for it. Persepolis was a personal story that Marjane LIVED, Chicken with Plums is also a very personal story, but it's about events well before her time. It's incredible she was able to weave such a compelling personal tale, with what was probably second hand information. Scraps here and there from different people, all of a man she never knew; and yet she writes him with an honesty that can only come with actually knowing someone. I feel her art here is brilliantly utilized more so than in Persepolis......at peak moments(mainly the transitions between the chapters). Overall though there isn't much going on. Again though it's hard to find fault with Marjane, this is a character driven tale and unfortunately the character is confined to his room. If you've read Persepolis, don't go in expecting it to be Persepolis. Pacing here is very quick and very immediate. It's a story of highs and lows, not in the sense that it's about highs and lows per se but in the sense that the pacing and artwork sort of intertwine and work against each other from page to page creating a chaotic mix of despair and frustration that forces you through each painful page. Boredom is never part of the equation though, as this is a deeply human tale grounded in primal emotions that we all experience. Persepolis was a tale of overcoming adversity and is a celebration of the tenacity of the human spirit. Chicken with Plums is an altogether different experience. It's about acceptance and ends and is a meditation on the frailty of the human will to live. Marjane Marjane the more I read the more I love you!
