Alexandru Andrasoni alexandrasoni — But Remember Their Names is a legal thriller that pits newly-minted Harvard Law graduate Cindy Jakubek against wealthy clients layered behind large stacks of money and still other attorneys protecting conflicting interests, members of the art theft world (and possibly the folks behind the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum heist), art recovery insurance consultants whose methods resemble those of Pittsburg gangbangers, the U.S. Department of Justice, and a weak, self-involved postmodern novelist fiance. On the positive side, Cindy is fiercely loyal to her working class dad, Vince, who runs an over-extended tool business and is biding her time working under the tutelage of Luis Mendez while running out the clock on her deferred hiring date with the aptly-named NYC law firm of Calder & Bull. Unlike her future employers, Mendez has scruples as well as high regard for Cindy's intelligence, professional and personal integrity. The plot is complex enough to keep readers riveted, but sometimes the linking logic--or how Cindy was able to make a connection between seemingly disparate details--is insufficient. As such, you find yourself doing a double-take trying to determine whether you missed something. And no, you didn't. The "whodunnit" part is entirely predictable, and you'll likely guess it on the first page. That's neither important, nor particularly disappointing. Far more intriguing are the little snippets of deals that Cindy suggests--whether proposing hiring strategies in a mock interview, arranging an appeal that clears a deceased client's record and brings his mother some much-needed closure, or helping her Dad to move on after her mother's death. Cindy is an incredibly smart, observant, and resourceful protagonist and I just wanted to understand more clearly how she drew certain connections.
