I found this 1957, former Bookmobile copy of Great American Negroes stored in a trunk in my mother's garage. The various stories of those profiled are quite interesting. The reader is given an in-depth view of key factors and milestones in the lives of such greats as Louis Armstrong, Marian Andersen, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, James Weldon Johnson, Ralph Bunche, Dorie Miller, and a host of other great African Americans who excelled in the fields of music, the theater, art, literature, education, the church, civic leadership, science, sports, and the military.

Great plot and stunning ending. Thoughtful and deliberate Germanic prose.

Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner isn't the classic that a lot of people have billed it as, but it's a well-written, compelling story, and a promising debut. Though this is the first novel published in English by an Afghan writer, the themes are hardly foreign: betrayal of best friends, internal anguish juxtaposed against the chaos of war, and how the sins of one generation torture another. The protagonist, Amir, is a particularly likable character, and Hosseini gives him the voice of somebody you could sit with and have tell you a story; he is simple, but smart; moral, but with foibles; loyal, but his one betrayal of his friend/servant Hassan haunts him through his whole life. I liked The Kite Runner; it's become obvious that this politics-and-war-torn country has a lot of stories to tell with universal appeal.

Keep in mind, I apparently read the "short version". I didn't know that there were two different lengths until after I read it, and I plan on reading the longer version later on. Until then though, this book is amazing. Like other classic french novels I've read, it's a slow start. But once you get to a certain place, you just want to know more and more and more and more...you get the picture. The characters were surprisingly interesting. When I hear that a story is "a classic tale of insert genre", I don't expect too much in the way of characterization (unless that's part of the description). However, I got into these characters and their struggles. I really wanted the good guys to survive and win, and those jerks who caused all this pain and suffering. One point for Dumas. Morally, there's no swearing as far as I can recall, but there is some violence and death. However, it's not really discussed in great detail so those who are squeamish have nothing to worry about. Then again, I read the shorter version, so who knows. Good: Classic tale of revenge, characters, descriptions, and this is only the short version! Bad: Takes a bit to build up. There is no excuse for anyone to not read any version of this book. I can't wait to read the longer version! EDIT: Read the full version, and it's even better and more indepth :D!

Well, I finished this. For some reason I had set it aside some time ago (audio) and forgot I was listening to it. Unlike most of the Kellerman series it doesn't feature Alex Delaware and his friend Milo, rather Detective Petra Connor and Eric, her erstwhile lover, who apparently walks on water. The show stealer is Isaac, a PhD candidate interning with the police department, who, through diligent research and a hell of a randy librarian, manages to find the connection between the killer and his victims. Perhaps a bit tenuous connection in my book, but way to whittle away the time.

I enjoyed this book very much! Especially the first 70% of the book was simply wondrous. There's a great balance of story set in historical England interconnected with a magical fantasy world. I found the plight of the young heroine, Coriander, highly engrossing. In the closing sections of the book though the climax seemed rather rushed, the last section felt like an overlong epilogue and the plot seemed to tie up a little too neatly. I particularly like Gardner's emotive and perfectly fitting descriptions of various characters or scenes. And she shows a strong visual creativity which she is able to adequately paint with her words. I quite like the font that this books is set in too ... especially the capital Q and the cute diagonal hyphens. Unfortunately I couldn't find anywhere, where the book says which font it uses :( I'm most interested to read future works by Sally Gardner.
