Started reading this on my trip back from China. Read this relatively quickly, as normally I am a slow reader! I enjoyed the passion that developed so quickly, the intensity of the relationship between Edward and Bella. The vampire aspect made the love story appealing to me, otherwise I am certain I would have never picked up the book (well, duh). I was disappointed in the climatic ending. Broken mirrors, broken bones, broken glass, and then the explanation of what happened gave very little detail of that climax. I wanted details of how the predator was dealt with, and got very little. I am glad that there are two more books (plus Edward's unpublished account found on Stephenie Meyer's website) to read.

I had a hard time settling into this one. Exhaustion, plus coming off a riveting last read, made me feel like this was more work than pleasure. Like my sister, Camille said when I told her what I was reading, "Yikes, Em, are you depressed or something?" That pretty much summed up my initial feelings on the book. Upon finishing it however, I have to say I really liked it. What feels gloomy, ends surprisingly hopeful, and gave me a very pleasant outlook on life and its potential. I found the characters truly dynamic, in a way only emotionally constipated British characters can. All in all, very satisfying.

Ok -- I finally finished it. There's not much I can say that wasn't already discussed in our dialogue, but overall I definitely enjoyed the book. As a religious person, I can definitely relate to a memoir which explores spiritual ups and downs, and the fact that it wasn't written from a Jewish perspective made it more interesting for me. I'm wondering -- are she and Felipe still together? Just a little trivial aside there. Some parts were better than others, but I definitely thought it was worth reading.

If Kaylee doesn't end up with Tod in the Soul Screamers series, I'd take off Rachel Vincent in my list of favorite authors..LOL (but so far, I still love her!) ...I just love Kaylee and Tod, I don't like Nash for her and rather let Sabine have him. *** This book totally took me by surprise! I was only hoping for more of Kaylee/Tod flirting but never imagined that they'll end up together in this book. And I really did my 'dorky dance' when Kaylee kissed Tod.. AHH MY GAWD!! :) Now Rachel Vincent is one of my most followed author. LOL.

Great world building, compelling protagonist, but I thought the plot somewhat lost steam after the first few chapters.

I didn't like this as much as Mirette on the high wire because it involved a dastardly villain that was trying to at best, discredit, at worst, KILL Bellini and Mirette. Also, there was a side story of a boy whose parents had died and he was all alone and had nowhere to go, and I just think that's a little too hardcore for the 4-7 age range for whom I saw this book attracting.

I love how Fforde will set up a pun 15 chapters in advance.

I am an admitted (surface) neat freak, in that I like everything that is out that I can see to be organized and put in its place, but I don't fold my laundry; I put my laundry in designated drawers, but all thrown in together. This book is very interesting in the psychology of organization vs. messiness and has a strong argument that asserts that allowing a little bit of messiness into your life can actually be a good thing. The author cites several examples that everyone can relate to. It's opened up my mind just a little bit more about neatness and mesiness, and negotiating a healthy level of both in my life. This was an interesting and fast read.
