A really great book that discusses the thinking of some of the U.S.'s leading political thinkers. Hofstadter really illuminates the character of leading American politicians and shows how that counteracts against the prevailing myths surrounding them. I thought that Calhoun, Lincoln, and FDR were the best chapters.

I enjoy end-of-the-world type stories and this was no exception, almost worth 4 stars, but not quite. I have mixed feelings about JH, having loved his old horror novels when I was in my teens and early 20s (yes, I'm getting on a bit!), but losing interest when he started trying to be more serious and writing longer, wordier novels. This was the first book of his I've read for years, and has made me want to check out was he's being doing since we were last acquainted.

One of my personal favourites. Excellent story-line, real embodiment of the gritty world of 19th Century London.

A fascinating historical novel based on real people, Red Water is told from the perspective of three different women, who happen to be three wives of the same man: John D. Lee. Lee was eventually executed (some say he was the scapegoat) for the Mountain Meadows Massacre in Utah in 1857 where over 100 men, women and children were killed by a group of men disguised as Indians. These "Indians" turned out to be Mormon settlers, and the scandal and the massacre is said to lead right to the top: Brigham Young. The three storytellers are all very different: one is a young spitfire, still a rebellious teen; another is a faithful older woman; and the third is a young woman fresh from England. The tale is a fascinating read, so much more so since it is based on true, chilling events.

Excellent book. Gets a little wordy with the talk of perfume and the brain. But the story of Alobar makes it all worth the read.

"Warm Bodies" is a well-written, even-paced novel that hooked me pretty quickly. The idea of a zombie falling in love with an uninfected human was very intriguing. I'm not sure how satisfied I am with the ending but the rest of the book was quite entertaining. It's not a typical zombie book and won't be for everyone. If you're looking for gore and over-the-top violence you won't find much of that here. "Warm Bodies" is very sentimental, questions what it means to be alive, and had me feeling melancholy more often than not.

I wouldn't argue this was fantastic literature, but it was a creative story and Meyer's put alot of effort into creating this world for the reader.
