This book from the series was a slower read for me. The plot was slower, however towards the end it picked up the pace that the previous four had. It was stil a delightful read and I did enjoy it and I am looking forward to the last two of the series.

I am utterly shocked that this book doesn't receive 5* from every individual who stumbles across it. It's hilarious, a celebration of language and wit. It had me unashamedly laughing out loud on many occasions and I don't hesitate to recommend to anyone with a strong sense of humour and a love of eccentric characters.

This book does an excellent job of putting the current state of biodiversity in context, both of deep time and the immediate perspective. There are very clear explanations of ecological concepts. The simple title doesn’t convey the threats to biodiversity and the ideas for combating them that are in the book. This book thrilled me because it explains how ecological problems can be addressed, while considering the realities of human needs. I find it endlessly frustrating when conservation advocates don’t offer solutions, and The Diversity of life explains a breadth of solutions to ecological degradation from throughout the world. This couldn’t be done without a quite astounding familiarity with a wide range of ecology.

This book is meant to be empowering, but to me it was extremely depressing. I guess I'm a glass half empty kind of person. It is so frustrating to hear what is happening in education and to see, first hand, the struggles in my school and the insane amount of stress my staff is under to pass a standardized test that is a completely inappropriate measure of reading & writing ability. Not to mention the fact that the way we are told to prepare for this test is to use basal series that are bending facts to sell expensive books and line their own pockets. The flaws and purposely miscommunicated points made by the National Reading Panel are downright scary. I went into teaching because all this money grubbing business stuff irritates the snot out of me.

For someone who is supposed to be so level headed, I found Agatha Raisin in this book to be more than a little silly. Added to that, my Nook book came with the opening of the 17th Agatha Raisin book which contained not an insignificant spoiler. Not sure I'll read any more.
