I really enjoyed Doig's writing style. This story that centers around a one room school house in the early 1900's kept my attention and was beautiful to read.

"What you put into your head is there forever." Um...No, it's not, but it's obviously true for Cormac McCarthy, who can't shake his fusty ideas about women (or stop repeating that above phrase until it's tattooed on our eyeballs). Take this bit of dialogue, from a woman who's about to commit suicide: "You can think of me as a faithless slut if you like. I've taken a new lover. He can give me what you cannot. ..Because I am done with my whorish heart and I have been for a long time." Now I don't know about others, but if I were struggling to survive in a bleak post-apocalyptic landscape and running from packs of marauding cannibals, I think the last thing I'd be doing is going on paragraph after paragraph calling myself a whore. And really, what elevates this speech above the level of Danielle Steele? McCarthy certainly is bombastic and sonorous, but when you have to describe your apocalyptic landscape as "a grave yawning at judgment day in some old apocalyptic painting" then maybe you're doubling up a bit. A brave critic once referred to McCarthy as the Dave Thomas of literature and after reading this, I'm close to agreeing.

Great book to introduce people to the evils of the government. Like 1984 lite. Read this first, or it will suck in comparison.

A great read. It takes place 10 years from the present. It is interesting to see how the DC characters have aged. The artwork is top notch and the story rocks along with a few surprises.

this is a touching story of a family torn apart by a father's secret. while the story itself is great, the best part of this novel is the questions it raises regarding reproductive rights and prenatal testing.

i'm not sure if i it's because i couldn't relate because i don't have kids, but this book was only slightly better than ok. i also read this on my longest layover ever for work, so i probably wasn't in the best mood.

Audiobook. There is a reason that this book (Bronte's first to try to publish) was published posthumously. It is dull--and since most of it takes place in Belgium (where Bronte went to school) half of it is also in French. Since I listened to it and couldn't find an actual copy in the library, I don't know if the French is transleted in the book. It was on the audiobook (thank goodness). I listened to this book because I am reading "The Secret Adverntures of Charlotte Bronte" and it has been so long since I read Jane Eyre that I wanted a reminder of Bronte's style. Rowland's and Bronte's styles are completely different, it turns out. But Rowland's book, quite fantastical fiction, was useful at least in revealing things to me about Bronte I didn't know and which, undoubtably inspired this book. These included her disasterous first boarding school experience, her Brussels schooling, and her unrequited love for her school master. Since all of these things took place long before the action of the book, I assume that they were actually part of Bronte's real life. It helped me understand this book better and why she may of written it--possibly as a wish fullfillment. Without doubt, in this book Bronte shows great deftness at understanding people's characters, but most of this book is character study with very little plot or action. The boring lives of boring people are still boring even when written about masterfully.

What a pleasure to know that the current president of Harvard is also an expert on the Civil War. Her latest book (and perhaps her last for the time being) focuses on how death touched everyone living in America at the time of the Civil War. It was not nearly as morbid as I expected, but actually quite interesting.
