Now I don't know about others, but if I were struggling to survive in a bleak post-apocalyptic landscape and running from packs of marauding cannibals, I think the last thing I'd be doing is going on paragraph after paragraph calling myself a whore. And really, what elevates this speech above the level of Danielle Steele? McCarthy certainly is bombastic and sonorous, but when you have to describe your apocalyptic landscape as "a grave yawning at judgment day in some old apocalyptic painting" then maybe you're doubling up a bit. A brave critic once referred to McCarthy as the Dave Thomas of literature and after reading this, I'm close to agreeing.
