I have to say that I enjoyed Queen of Swords by Sara Donati much better than the previous two prequels. I was worried that she was taking on too much by trying to keep the huge story going to the next generation and the next, etc., but this novel was very well written and engaging.

I'm not really sure why I liked this book...but I do know that I only liked it, I didn't love it. It was a long read, but enjoyable...good summer reading if you like saucy historical setting fiction. It was entertaining enough that I wanted to continue reading it, but altogether disappointing in the end. I think I kept reading because it was well enough written and it had all the elements for an intriguing story and so I kept waiting for something significant to happen. And it just never did. The dichotomy between good/evil, pure/fallen, saint/sinner was presented througout the entire novel, but aside from toying with these questions, I was waiting for something more.

Daniel Tammet is an autistic savant. He can do incredible math problems in his head, and holds the record for reciting memorized digits of pi. If you tell him your birthday, he will tell you the day of the week you were born on. How does he do it? I'm not sure Daniel's book actually answers that question, but it does let you see how he perceives the workings of his mind. Days are different colors, numbers are shapes. His story, told in his own words, is amazing. Not only that, but the people who were around him when he was growing up, supported this "different" child by being sensitive to his needs, and allowing him to be who he was--his family (especially his parents), his teachers, and finally his partner Neil. By being willing to push through his own shyness and fears and put himself out in the world, Daniel gives all of us a glimpse into what it's like to not fit into our norms.

I liked it a bit the first time, but then when I tried to re-read it the second time, everything about the writing style completely bugged me. So I suppose it gets 3 stars if you average the two reads of it.

A beautiful tale touching upon farm life, poverty, immigration . . .. This is the kind of story that lingers and slowly develops in your mind many days after you've finished reading it. When you're done, you're left with a sens of melancholy and you feel as if you've returned from a special trip where you've met these people.

The first story made my fear of death grow from slight to overwhelming.

This book informs you about real life, but also has a bit of fantasy.
