I liked this entire series - the characters were great and I thought the plot was original and interesting. That being said, I wasn't too crazy about how it ended. In some ways, I thought things were tied up too neatly. In other ways, I didn't like some of the loose ends that were left. Even so, I enjoyed reading this book (and the trilogy) and I would recommend it to fans of teen realistic fantasy fiction. (Yes, I do think I just made that genre up, but it's an accurate description of the books.)

I am so excited to see how this 2nd book by Khalid will be. The Kite Runner was excellent so I'm expecting more from this book. The book was as good as I had hoped. It goes into the life of two women from different backgrounds in Afghanistan who end up in dire circumstances. The relationships and story telling are so good. I have to admit that I cried reading this book too. If you love reading stories about love / relationships, then you will love this book.

The content is shocking and likely unfamiliar to most people. For that reason alone, it is worth reading. However, I thought the writing was just OK. I understand the difficulty of writing about history when the powerful guilty party has done its best to destroy the evidence (burning it in the furnaces of Brussels)and the weak victim left no written records to begin with. But, IMO a good historian should not "suppose" what someone "must have thought"--even to make it readable. The best part of the book is the re-examination of Heart of Darkness--it's not a moral fable, it is historical fiction.

I didn't like this much at all at first. Didn't realize it was well into a series - so took awhile to get to know the characters. jumped into sex pretty quick and was kind of crude. By the end of the book I liked it more and I'd probably try another one at some point.

One of the few examples where the movie and the book compliment each other. Both are fantastic! I read this and was so excited to find out it was a movie. I watched the movie and fell deeper in love with the characters. This is another book that made me gasp and sob at the ending.

While this isn't the worst book I've ever read, it certainly is far from the best. I think if this book had remained your average high school coming of age love story, it would have been a better book. I found Bella to be a likable enough character in the beginning, shy and clumsy, but she'd show some backbone if you made her angry enough. Then Edward enters the scene and takes over, he walks right over any show of strength or independence from her like he finds it funny or something. Plus throughout the book he's kind of a jerk. Then after Bella becomes obsessed with him, the entire story becomes how she can't be without him, and he has to have her, even though technically they shouldn't be together and it's 'yes,no,yes,no' for the rest of the book. I gave the book 2 stars instead of 1 because there were a handful of moments that I did like, but they were few.
