I come back to The Pillow Book over and over again. Her lists remind me of a friend with a blog. "Things I Hate" is the perfect title for an entry, isn't it? Sei Shonagon's (real name unknown, but probably from the family Kiyohara) lyrical style comes through even in translation, and her snippets of court life in the Heian era provide a window into how people really felt and thought...not just a cleaned up version.

Nothing happened in this book until the last 50 pages when the author conveniently tried to wrap up 3 or 4 story lines. I could not wait to finish it.

The book threatened to take the drama too far here and there, but it somehow worked. The only book that has actually made me cry. "Daddy?" You gotta realize, I think I'm the only boy on earth that ran out of Judy Blume books and read Are You There God It's Me Margaret? God?...God?

This book contained a lot of truths about the "real world". I especially enjoyed the analogy to Adam and Eve and the loss of innocence from the Garden of Eden. I found it valuable to be inside the head of a character with an autism spectrum disorder (much of it rang true to life but there were a few false notes.) I did, however, grow tired of Marcelo referring to himself in the third person (PRONOUNS, kid, use the pronouns!) I found a lot to think about while reading this book.

"An acting company conceived an idea in 1594 that it realized in 1608 and that helped it to run for forty-eight years as the unrivalled leader of its time. In 1599 the company conceived a management system that made its actors their own managers and financiers, creating the only effective democracy of its time in totalitarian England." Well, an effective democracy absent the involvement of any women except the supporting monarch. Academic. As detailed a history of The King's Men as can be achieved, given the availability of evidence, from its origins to its end when the theatres were closed for nearly twenty years, by order of The Privy Council, for reasons of plague, politics and puritanism.

Linc liked this one, but it was a little over his head. I think it could have been better if they'd chosed to use photographs instead of illistrations, and also showed a before and after picture. Still good and informative though. But I do think Linc will like it better in a few years.

I read this in one sitting on an airplane. A very gripping novel.

I loved this book for the time that was spent in Italy. The plot was good and of course it was a page turner but the fact that half the book was spent in Italy made the book even better.
