But there's a deeper message about identity, hip-hop and the siphoning of Black culture by white America. Mansbach explores how universal hip-hop is, yet how rooted it is in Black diasporic culture and that a love for hip-hop doens't necessarily mean a love for social justice. Mansbach also reflects the structure of hip-hop in his writing approach, using the beats and timing so familiar to those of us from the hip-hop generation. A provocative read - I'd suggest reading it in a book club or with a friend. You're gonna want to talk about it.
