Sir John Hargrave is a minor superhero: he has made a career of pranking large companies, celebrities, governments, and other organizations that screw with the little people. His targets are judiciously chosen, and the results had me laughing out loud throughout. Between opening his own Starbucks within a Starbucks, filing his taxes using only roman numerals, waking up spammers at three am to be removed from their distribution lists, getting Walmart to sell porn, and testing various penis enlargement medications, his pranks are harmless and good humored, but illuminate some of the ridiculousness we've grown to tolerate. Sir Hargrave is very gently raging against the machine. Good for him.

Winner of awards, but not much there. This is basically A Long, Long Time Ago and Essentially True but in post-war Balkans (unnamed land, but apparently Belgrade) instead of WWII Poland. Obreht has talent at turning a nice phrase, but she looooves her details. She’s long on description, short on character and plot. Like, the main girl, what is her story? She’s close to her grandpa, likes being a doctor, seems to be a little arrogant and a little selfish (case in point – lies to her best friend about getting candy to instead spend several hours pursuing her grandpa’s belongings – as if it had to be done just that second and at no other time – thus leaving her supposed best friend all alone to cope with a gaggle of kids she’s trying to vaccinate and has run out of candy to bribe. Great friendship, main girl!). But…that’s about as much as we get out of her. And her grandpa – good man, principled, believes in the rational but is also kinda-friends with a deathless man. Which sounds like a lot but comes off as flat. Of course, we also get chapter-long backstories on random characters like the butcher. The butcher is terrible and does not deserve a backstory. His story is that he just beats his deaf-mute wife because he feels frustrated and trapped! Because the girl he loved ran away and instead he had to be wed her younger sister, a deaf-mute child bride! And he is a butcher instead of the musician he wanted to be! I would like to point out that the butcher's wife - who is also the titular tiger's wife - does not get a backstory. She remains an enigma and is nothing more than a stock character abused spouse - she has no sense of personality or individual drive. How is she not FUCKING ANGRY that her sister ran away and left her with an abusive rapist??? I mean, sure he was a sensitive musician when her sister left, but this sister never once checks up on the little sis she left behind? Maybe the butcher/tiger's wife has hidden depths and is actually a quietly strong/brave girl in a terrible situation but we'll never know because we never got her backstory or really much of her story at all besides what pertained to the butcher or tiger. Nice going, Obreht But, oh yeah, we do get a looong backstory about the Bear Hunter who is a bit player and his story is: he hunts bears. Fails to kill the tiger. Why does he get a backstory but the “tiger’s wife” remains a one-note character? I did like the idea of the Deathless Man (the nephew of death who manages to piss him off) and he was fun whenever he showed up but that alone did not save the story.

YES YES YES
This is great! some parts can be a little trying... but i am drawn to the main character and her struggles, which may be frightening, oh well. Sylvia Plath is a wonderfully dark writer and it's just too bad that she ended things so young.

I really liked how she jumped through each of her days, so that the self-explanatory challenges were just mentioned and the reader can just jump to the interesting bits. Despite being anecdotes about her separate challenges, she still managed to connect a few themes here and there, with the help of reoccurring characters in her life and the same feeling of stress over the year. Her witty writing, reflection over her website's comments, and candidness helped the book avoid being another how-to-green-your-life book. It's not just about environmentalism and sustainability, it's a good read.

Timshel. Read this one years ago. Jogged my memory for a book club.
