The more I think about The Beautiful Life the more I dislike it. I honestly can't figure out why the NY Times book review gave it a glowing critique. The characters were never fully developed and I had little to no emotional reaction when I was finished. It had great potential and could have really delved into the advent of the internet as being central to the life of teenagers, along with providing insight into how parents attempted to navigate a rapidly changing digital world before it was fully mainstream. (The book takes place in 2003, a time when viral videos and the like were a fairly new and uncharted concept.) Instead it seems like the author had a good idea that people were taken with in principle, but in actuality it was a missed opportunity. Basically it's a book with a meaty subject that quickly peters off in the first quarter. The character of Daisy is given short shrift, the ending comes suddenly and feels empty, and the parents overall were one-dimensional. The entire thing either needed to be a succinct short story or a much longer, more complex novel. Instead it hovered somewhere in the middle and was a huge disappointment.

There's definitely a lot more books nowadays that deal with faeries, but this is probably one of the best ones out there. A definite plot that's evident from the start of the story, believable characters, and quotes from renowned fairy books make this novel one of my favorites that I never get tired of reading.

This was my first Steam Punk read, and I have to say, I completely enjoyed it. I like how you have the Victorian setting in England during the 1800's but there are also some of the machines from today, howbeit somewhat in crude form. It was interest to see what new mechanical device would appear next. This story is about Finley who is a strong, independent, kind, and stubborn girl who has trust issues, and is going through changes she can not explain. Through certain events she is quite literally put in the path of the handsome and wealthy Griffin Duke of Greythorne. He noticed she has special abilities and tells her she is like him and his friends, and that she should stay with them. Which true enough Griffin does have an amazing group of friends, who are unique with special abilities. We have Sam, who is strong and willing to sacrifice his life for his friends. He at times is very annoying, stubborn, full of chivalry and naive. Emily is a cute little thing good friend, smart, kind, and willing to sacrifice for others. Jasper is witty, handsome, fast and a good friend. Griffin is the glue in a sense that holds them all together, he is smart, handsome, full of chivalry, kind and good to others. I really enjoyed his character a lot. Finley is fun to watch. She is now on the adventure of her life, trying to figure out what is going on with herself, wondering whom she can and can not trust and what to think of feelings toward certain men in her life. Oh I cannot forget Jack Dandy, he is an interesting character who Finely has some associations with, must say quite intriguing. The group of friends must figure out their loyalties to each other as they let Finley into their group, of which they know very little about. Griffin also has a case to solve concerning the Machinist, and it is quite personal. This was a such a fun an intriguing read, writing was great and flowed smoothly. My favorite part of this book were the characters, and how well developed they each were. The relationships and dialog amongst them was great. Felt like I was right there with them. Story was intriguing with lots of twist and turns. There is a wonderful romance or two a brewing, which is what I love, could have a little more in this one, but I have great hopes that the next book will have even more. A definite must read! Some language Clean romance

I know! I can't believe I only just read this, either! It's so up my alley, and I really dug it. It all goes something along the line of: Find the numbers for everything you don't think can be measured in numbers, and figure out what the numbers mean; what patterns and correlations they expose. So J.T. paid his employees $9,500, a combined monthly salary that was only $1,000 more than his own official salary. J.T.'s hourly wage was $66. His three officers, meanwhile, each took home $700 a month, which works out to about $7 an hour. And the foot soldiers earned just $3.30 an hour, less than minimum wage. So the answer to the original question--if drug dealers make so much money, why are they still living with their mothers?--is that, except for the top cats, they don't make much money. They had no choice but to live with their mothers. For every big earner, there were hundreds more just scraping along. The top 120 men in the Black Disciples gang represented just 2.2 percent of the full-fledged gang membership but took home well more than half the money. And yes, those actually are real figures, from the detailed books J.T. (a business school grad) kept for the 4 years he headed up his branch of the gang.

This was very refreshing to read after reading several books about drugs and hard lives. Marley is a bad dog with a good heart, my favorite kind of personality in a pet. It made me laugh, cry, and everything in between. Theres a reason this book has been a bestseller for over a year. John Grogan, Philadelphia journalist, writes from his perspective as the man of the house who just wants to keep his dog under control. I'm proud to say that this dog was actually worse than my own dogs. The book was a light, extremely easy read... finished in two quick sittings. I need to check out the children's picture book too.

This book was really good. It shows that even though you let people know your intentions from the beginning some still seem not to understand. I was sad at the end, even though the father was a dog, i still felt bad for him. He always let them women that he slept with know actually what he wanted, so was he really in the wrong if the agreed with the actions?

Believe it or not, I've finally finished this book! I began it in November of 2006 and, partly because it's nonfiction, read it in fits and spurts between then and now. Clark's writing is astonishing (every time I picked it up again, I was amazed to hear this woman from the 1950s still speaking loud and clear in her own voice) and she weaves together the history of Breton with the life cycle of the delicious Belon oyster (les plates)
