This book contains essays by many contemporary female Chinese writers. As someone raised with religion, and a woman who has feminist musings myself, it was an incredibly interesting read and I found myself comparing their situations to mine, despite many obvious differences. After all, the struggle for equality of women in China "ended" with the beginning of communism. I say "ended" because women were allowed to work in the fields, and go to school, and after that the men didn't take women seriously when they wanted more rights, and the women felt guilty for still feeling oppressed. This series of essays takes a good look at the conflicted feelings women have who grew up in the past forty years in China. Many of the essays feel like they could have been written by feminists in 1960's America. I sincerely recommend this book to anyone interested in China or feminism. I will also add that though many of the perspectives hit close to home, there were also some that were shockingly unlike what most American women would think.

Have you ever had a jam packed day where it seems nothing goes according to plan? Right from when you wake up till bed time? I know I have, and Jen Tucker shares each tale and how she realizes, at that last (and only) pit stop before bed, that all day she was wearing her panties inside out. Jen’s day starts with her husband leaving for a week long business trip overseas. She terribly misses him, especially because he travels more than he is at home, hence she calls herself a “married single parent.” Their family has just moved into a new home. There are almost always issues that arise where the inspector finds something wrong, that the insurance company will not cover. DAMN those insurance companies!! A few more events of Jen’s day (many she forgets, but must be taken care of today) include dropping off clothes at the cleaners, but forgetting the clothes, how she needs to get her TB shot before school starts (Jen teaches), and that happens to be in two days, her son’s appointment, and attempting to keep her dogs from straying off the front yard. Even though this day seems to never end with nuisance after nuisance, with Jen’s hilarious and blunt sense of humor, and her being such a loving and caring person, readers will sympathize, identify and laugh out loud. She also gets emotional at times. I can definitely relate to this, as I am a crier as well. But it’s better to be emotional than keep things in, which Jen DOES NOT  Here is what I have learned from Jen and will take away from this memoir: I am going to try harder to be more patient with people and see the good in them, even if I find them quite annoying or they appear (being the optimal word) that they have no idea what they are doing or talking about. As Jen says, and I SO agree, this is much easier said than done. Every person is unique, and whoever we meet in our life, they are meant to be there and serve us a purpose. I am also going to try to have faith that whoever is “up there” is watching out for me, and even if I start to think “WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING UP THERE,” I have to be patient and know everything happens for a reason.

I found this book at a yard sale in a college town. I don't think I ended up being charged for it. I must say that this book was the best yard sale find of my life. Rarely does a book really take me far, far out of my element to the point that the world around me (outside of the book) feels strange. I was completely taken in to this Kenyan's gritty life. I finished this wanting more... I would love to get my hands on more books from this author. I forced my husband to read it and he felt the same way.

This is fantastic follow up to the flawed opening of the Sandman saga. It's got some pacing issues, but even during these dull moments there are some interesting concepts being explored. The ability to have so much variety while maintaining a mostly stable whole is remarkable. The dry humour, some truly shocking moments of horror and a brilliantly conceived, thought provoking finale stand out as the highlights of the volume.

Wil Wheaton recommended it, so I gave it a shot. I got about 100 pages in, and I couldn't keep going. It's not something I'd normally like (violent crime fiction). I tried, though.
