Yongqiang Gu snest — Jacob Reckless's childhood is marred by the sudden disappearance of his father until he discovers the magical properties of a mirror in his father's study which allows him to travel into a fairy tale reality. He spends most of his time in the other world without his brother and mother until one day his younger brother Will follows him through the mirror. All is not well in the other world, and the two brothers are caught in the violence when Will is attacked by a Goyle, and his body begins turning to stone. Despite Jacob's distant relationship with Will developed by years of separation by the mirror, Will trusts his older brother completely, and the two set off on a quest to find a cure. They are joined by Will's fiance, Clara, adn Jacob's longtime companion, a shape-shifting human/fox. The quartet faces dangers from fairy tale characters who are familiar and other who are more obscure to American audiences. Even this magic world is filled with corruption, greed, and deceit. Though this is a fantastical tale, the characters are believable. This book is a challenge to place because many of the plot elements will appeal to younger readers, but the characters are older than in Funke's earlier books and deal with more adult problems and situations. I really enjoyed this story, and I definitely recommend it fairy tale and fantasy fans.

Giorgio Borba gb93 — I'm currently picking through this collection of short stories that these young writers wrote in the thirty days after they were placed on the Granta Young American Novelists list. I went to a reading recently where Akhil Sharma (one of the chosen) basically said that only three of the writers in these pages are worthy of the title. I've only read two of the stories -- Karen Russell's and Rattawut Lapcharoensap's -- both of which I loved (full disclosure: I was in the same program as Russell so I might be biased).

Wieslaw Obrzydowski aleksandra_o — The operative (and obligatory) phrase to describe these poems, would be "disturbingly funny". "Behold the meaty bed of royalty! Behold the final Biggie!"

Andrius Raudonikis _audonikis — Wil Wheaton recommended it, so I gave it a shot. I got about 100 pages in, and I couldn't keep going. It's not something I'd normally like (violent crime fiction). I tried, though.

Vithor Félix _ithinho29 — Billy Hazelnuts is the kind of comic I'd give my sister's kids...if I had a sister and she had kids. A very funny and kind of dark fable with some awesome art by Sock Monkey / Drinky Crow man-boy Tony Millionaire.

Marina Flórez _arina_lorez — The first person narrative makes this fictitious novel hard to put down. A letter from a kidnapping victim to her captor tells of her personal account.

Katya Velshkova zxc345 — I've read it again since. It is good read every so often. This book was written as result of President Kimbabll's many discussions with people over the years. I love his straight forward nature. This is not a light read.
