Margaret Schlegel has easily become one of my favorite "classical heroines", if you could categorize her as such. Unappologetically single, bordering on "spinsterhood", for most of the story, she finds contentment in art and the pursuit of lively debate. She reads as a very contemporary character as a result. Her world is insular yet she has a preternatural ability towards empathy and is the glue for the characters around her. Her relationship with the widower Henry Wilcox is almost unromantic in its sensical development, yet you still feel compelled to see their relationship succeed against familial obstacles. A really beautiful read with very rich characters at its center.

I love everything Steinbeck, but particularly this book. The duo of George and Lenny is hard to beat. In fact, I'm not quite sure if I can think of a story that has. This book evokes such nostalgia in me, and I'm not sure if it's the characters, the fact that it's set in my home state and that I can perfectly picture the setting, or that I've read it a half a dozen times. Maybe it's just because Steinbeck is a genius and manages to make all of his books moving, unforgettable and nostalgic.

At first I was irritated because the plot seemed essentially the same as The Corrections--older couple, man losing mind, adult children whose lives are in a bit of chaos, etc. Despite some glaring similarities though, they are totally different books. I enjoyed these characters, despite their frustrating lack of communication, and overall really enjoyed the book.

This is a nice continuation of Jeremy and Brian's story. It won't be for everyone, because it deals with the taboo subject of love between twin brothers. The focus here is on the way they not only come to terms with what they feel for each other, but how they deal with the outside world and its reactions to their relationship. The double-whammy of learning to live with each other and the knowledge that society disapproves, makes for some tough decisions. I liked the way the author shos us the consequences of both.
