i found this whole series completely riveting. le guin has a wonderful, lyrical writing style that really ignites your imagination. the themes throughout the book were poignant and thought-provoking. definitely not your standard pulp fantasy stuff. the quote that goes something like "fiction is the poor man's philosophy" totally applies to le guin's work. (sorry, i don't remember who said that).

Half-way through this book. Very fascinating read on the history of the Mormon church as well as the scandal that rocked the church in the mid-80's with the release of some controversial historical documents.

The storytelling and story arc of this book I liked but the writing drove me a bit nuts. Conroy is just too in love with his own words and would have benefited from a severe editing. The dialogue is what drove this from a 3-star to a 2-star read. People don't talk like this to their friends, or anyone else for that matter. It distracted from an otherwise compelling, sometimes tragic, story.

One of the very best of the Nero Wolfe mysteries--and controversial for a mainstream detective novel written in 1964. A white civil rights crusader has her head bashed in with a billy club--souvenir from a Southern demonstration--and her black fiancee is arrested and charged with the murder. This novel is well plotted and continually absorbing, but I give it only four stars because Stout's diction and perspective--in spite of all his good intentions--sounds a bit racist forty years later.

Great for an older storytime audience. You can really get them participating- trying to guess what the story will be. The read aloud potential is high- reminds me of There is a Monster at the End of this Book.

I don't know what it was about this book, I never really got absorbed by it. There were interesting sections about photography and the nature of memory, but the story itself just didn't stand out for me.
