Did not deliver. Overhyped. Would have been on the edge of my seat suspended with suspense if the most shocking part of the plot wasn't spoiled both on the back cover and the large-print capital lettered reviews on the inside cover! This is not the kind of survival struggle that haunts my nightmares and wet dreams. Still, good enough to read in one sitting. EDIT upon further reflection: (SPOILER ALERT) . . . I cannot get over thinking about this book as an accidental study in 'manliness,' the idea/ideal. The four main characters in this novel include a hunter warrior strongman; his quieter, envious sidekick (the narrator); a respectable but goody goody guy; and a whiny, weak wimp. Of course it is the wimp who is raped (randomly in the woods by strangers). Deliverance could have been such an amazing book if it had dealt with this rape and the gendered effects of that kind of trauma. What does it mean for a man, in pursuit of 'manly adventure,' to be raped? How does a group of men deal or not deal with it, can they overcome stigma and shame, and if not, what are the effects of not acknowledging the trauma? But instead, Deliverance kind of boringly reinforced prevailing cultural norms-- the already 'girly' man is further emasculated, and his experience is quickly buried by typical adventure story fare: physical (not sexualized) pain, vengeance and the glorious sort of violence, and rafting down a crazy fuckin river. What a waste of an incredible plot device!

I liked Sadie's series. She took the characters places and directions that I wouldn't have taken them had I been writing the stories. But that made the books interesting.

I really enjoyed this book but thought that Huxely could have explored the society and the consequences of having the right to be miserable taken away, rather than romanticising the story to the extent that he did. Whilst I did enjoy it, I don't think it had as much impact on me as books such as 1984, which did examine the possibilities and consequences of a 'nanny state'. Having said that, taking the novel as just a story rather than looking at it as a commentary on society, I did really enjoy. I liked the writing style of Huxely and would recommend it to friends.

I picked up this book, because I've really enjoyed all the historical fiction by this author, and enjoyed this young girl's account of the Yellow Fever Plague of Philadelphia. It is an interesting revelation to people's characters to see how they behave when under extreme difficulty.

I thought this book would be really interesting, but I had too much or a hard time getting through the science of the plate tectonics. Finally I gave up because there wasn't enough of a narrative to go along with it to keep me interested. Maybe I'll try again another day...

I enjoyed this book so much more than I ever thought! Stowe does a fabulous job of showing you slavery from many viewpoints and of getting you emotionally involved in the debate over slavery. My favorite character was little Miss Eva-- her gentleness, her purity of heart, and how she managed to affect/influence others was amazing.
