This is one oddball story. Props for being utterly unique in tone/voice. Briony is never quite sane through the entire book. Briony’s thoughts are disjointed and fractured and dreamy. This cannot be a straightforward story because Briony’s thoughts are not straightforward. The plot, the romance, the characters were so good. Billingsley has a good head for romance - a sweet, funny one between Briony and Eldrich. There’s lots of awww moments and clever bantering. And I liked strange, Aspergers Rose (is that what she had? Or was it some mysterious swamp affliction?). It was eerily beautiful, but I can’t say I enjoyed it. I feel like the voice mucked up a perfectly good book, but on the other hand I cannot imagine this book being told in the normal straight-forward way. The magic was confusing – like, what was going on, what were these creatures? And how do the villagers accept the fact that Old Ones exist and the Chime Child can see them, but also totally willing to hang witches? And what was a witch then? A witch is not an Old One. But a witch is not a Chime Child. But a witch is evil. Also everyone’s pretty damn calm about hanging innocent girls. But also, why did the Chime Child not know about the Boggy Man infecting everyone with swamp cough but Briony did? What the hell is the Chime Child doing if not protecting the village from the Old Ones? It’s not even difficult for someone who can speak to the Old Ones to figure out that Boggy Man --> swamp cough; sewage system --> angers Boggy Man --> swamp cough. Why are you so useless, Chime Child?
