Much like the DaVinci Code in basic theme of characters and their involvement in plot/relationship to Dr. Langdon and each other, but still very exciting with lots of twists and turns. I like how Dan Brown uses ancient conspiracies to bring interest and knowledge of history. Very well written. I didn't want to put it down.

This is one oddball story. Props for being utterly unique in tone/voice. Briony is never quite sane through the entire book. Briony’s thoughts are disjointed and fractured and dreamy. This cannot be a straightforward story because Briony’s thoughts are not straightforward. The plot, the romance, the characters were so good. Billingsley has a good head for romance - a sweet, funny one between Briony and Eldrich. There’s lots of awww moments and clever bantering. And I liked strange, Aspergers Rose (is that what she had? Or was it some mysterious swamp affliction?). It was eerily beautiful, but I can’t say I enjoyed it. I feel like the voice mucked up a perfectly good book, but on the other hand I cannot imagine this book being told in the normal straight-forward way. The magic was confusing – like, what was going on, what were these creatures? And how do the villagers accept the fact that Old Ones exist and the Chime Child can see them, but also totally willing to hang witches? And what was a witch then? A witch is not an Old One. But a witch is not a Chime Child. But a witch is evil. Also everyone’s pretty damn calm about hanging innocent girls. But also, why did the Chime Child not know about the Boggy Man infecting everyone with swamp cough but Briony did? What the hell is the Chime Child doing if not protecting the village from the Old Ones? It’s not even difficult for someone who can speak to the Old Ones to figure out that Boggy Man --> swamp cough; sewage system --> angers Boggy Man --> swamp cough. Why are you so useless, Chime Child?

The scariest research novel of our time.

AMAZING! ... but... a little much for my brain. Not a novel I sped through and am unlikely to try it again. I do recommend it though - especially to people with bigger brains than mine!

I really loved this book. There were aspects that mirrored my own and my sisters' 1960s third-generation Armenian-American suburban lives so closely I wondered if Edgarian had been hiding in the closet of my (shared) bedroom. I own two copies of this in hardbound: one to lend out and one to cherish. I drove 2 hours to see/hear Edgarian read from the novel at a chain bookstore in Portland, OR. She seemed a little distant from the roomful of Armenians but then a book tour can really wipe you out. Here's hoping we can look forward to many more novels by Carol Edgarian. I can't wait to read her new one, The Three Stages of Amazement, releasing in just a few days.

I love apocalyptic fiction. It is one of my favorite genres. I also enjoy the occasional good Christian mythologically-themed horror. That being said, I couldn't even make it through 50 pages of this steaming pile. Not only did it read like a Chick Publication (those little religious pamphlets crazy people hand out on street corners), but a poorly written one at that. The success of this franchise is the best sign of the apocalypse we have. Avoid this like the plague.

Quick and easy read. Chronology was a bit difficult to follow at first, but it soon fits into place as the story progresses.

This book was a pretty good read, but the grammar in it drove me crazy. I don't like it when I have to read pages upon pages of incomplete sentences. I can understand using a period.to.emphasis. But it really got choppy and monotonous. There was also the crazy amount of foreshadowing in the beginning and that was annoying as well. Overall, I did like the book, the characters were interesting, and the plot was new.
