Another harrowing and beautiful one by Eugenides.

4/24/11: Sarah Turnbull a young Australian journalist, comes to Paris to live with a French lawyer whom she'd fallen in love with. This is the story of the six years of her acculturation, which begins, well, inauspiciously, but ends up (not surprisingly) happily. The first half, the part where everything she tries to do seems like a failure, is accurate, and often hilarious, but also comes across as a bit whiny, superficial, and also repetitive. But the second half gets more interesting, as the narrator begins to explore and wrestle with some deeper questions about cultural differences. As she becomes comfortable herself with her new home and country, she can grapple with more complex ideas: the role of women in French culture and politics; the contradictory nature of French bureaucracy and rules; the reasons behind the alien nature of a formal dinner party. Having barely scratched the surface of these cultural differences over the last eight months, I found these chapters fascinating and helpful. (Though it is still amazing to think that one guide for ex-pats trying to get along at a French dinner party gives the advice: "Pretend you're a chair. Then, when noone talks to you, you won't have hurt feelings. Who would talk to a chair?") Turnbull's writing is journalistic--a bit speedy, every so often a bit sloppy, but easy and fun to read. And it's nice to have an Aussie viewpoint, rather than an American, as it made me push myself out of an American mindset just a bit. I mean, we're all Anglos to the French, but we know the shades of difference!

Knowing in advance the basic topic of this book and knowing how popular it has been for many years, I expected to be really drawn into the book and to really feel for the characters. But, I didn't. Don't get me wrong, it is a good book. The two children have to come to grips with a town that is beautiful on one side and ugly with bigotry on the other. However, I never really cared about Tom Robinson. I didn't agree with what happened. I hate that our country's history is full of stories like this. I cheer that men like Atticus were willing to take on cases like this and try to change the status quo, but I don't think this particular book made Tom Robinson into a character I really knew. A character that I really felt for. Maybe that's the point. Maybe I'm only supposed to know about him from the perspective of a young girl. Maybe it is because the whole book felt inevitable. You knew almost from the beginning that something horrible would happen, but just didn't know how it would come about.

The only problem I have with this manga is that I wish the pacing was quicker. But it's only a tiny wish, otherwise this is as perfect as samurai manga can be with awesome art.

** spoiler alert ** This one started out really slow. One of the Saudi princes is fed up with the ridiculous spending of the the other 3000 or so princes, so he hatches a plan with the French to detroy all the Saudi oil rig things so he can take over the kingdom and get it back to the Beduoin way. In return the French get all the contracts to rebuild. Well this happens and of course causes a worldwide economic catastrophe. The Americans find out about it and try to prove what happen. They succeed, France gets in big trouble, and the Americans get the new contracts to help out the Saudis. Anyway, the pace quickly picked up and I ended up getting really into it. My biggest complaint was that the military speak could get a little confusing, but other than that I liked it pretty good. I give it a B-.

This author came to town, so the papers covered his new book. It sounds very intriguing: A powerful and searing novel of three lives fractured by a civil war. For ten years, Norma has been the voice of consolation for a people broken by violence. She hosts Lost City Radio, the most popular program in their nameless South American country, gripped in the aftermath of war. Every week, the Indians in the mountains and the poor from the barrios listen as she reads the names of those who have gone missing, those whom the furiously expanding city has swallowed. Loved ones are reunited and the lost are found. Each week, she returns to the airwaves while hiding her own personal loss: her husband disappeared at the end of the war. But the life she has become accustomed to is forever changed when a young boy arrives from the jungle and provides a clue to the fate of her long-missing husband. Stunning, timely, and absolutely mesmerizing, Lost City Radio probes the deepest questions of war and its meaning: from its devastating impact on a society transformed by violence to the emotional scarring each participant, observer, and survivor carries for years after. This tender debut marks Alarcón's emergence as a major new voice in American fiction.

One of the best books I've read in a long time. Goes into NYC history, the social history of labor unions, project houses, and immigrants on both coasts. A really in-depth look not only at New York but disease and social injustices.
