I actually listened to this book as my husband and I removed wallpaper. We had a few chuckles.

Anybody who remotely enjoys thinking would not enjoy this book. I found it to be "insulting my intelligence". Not being narcissistic here but this book is in no way inspirational nor motivational. Unless you are battling an existential crisis I doubt you would enjoy the book. I guess the target readers for this book are mainly those who had not done much reading and do not normally think(about anything at all). The reason I say this is because anyone who uses their head from time to time for task such as problem solving will know that this is a very shallow book. The fact that Spencer Johnson is a medical doctor leaves me wondering how an educated person like him would write such a shallow book. Anton Chekhov and Conan Doyle make a much better doctor author. Even Khaled Hosseini and Michael Crichton! I only read it because it was a bestseller for so long. Now I know better than to trust society's taste in books.

Another cool Phoenix noir. Killer opening sentence throws the reader immediately into Driver's violent world. Driver's story is unconventional while honoring the traditions of noir/crime novels. Recommended.

I've never found myself in a book before. I've never had a book speak to me directly. Of course, the author is chronicling his life with his wife - their falling in love, their marriage and her death but the way he explains music and what it means ... I tear up cuz he explains it so well. There are lots of indie-bands I've never heard of and I'm going to look into. The man explains Kurt Cobain and his death, someone I never understood or particularly liked but for the first time, I get it, and am interested in going back and listening to Nirvana. This book is just wonderful, it's like finding an old friend and never wanting to let go, if that makes any sense

I learned from this book that Dave Eggers is capable of writing a book that doesn't sink into the depths of self obsession. It's a gateway book- it makes you want to learn as much as you can about the Sudan and its lost boys.

Read "Crowds": Canetti makes a curious attempt at categorizing different crowds (baiting, flight, prohibition, double...), though some of this crowd categorization goes against what he had earlier said about the moment of crowd formation being the discharge of difference that transforms people's usual fear of being touched into a desire to be touched, a desire to form one equal social body. That is, some of the crowds he categorizes/reifies/ontologizes aren't formed by discharge. His most curious part of this book might be his examination of crowd symbols -- things like fire, the ocean, corn, sand -- that can be used to either symbolize or understand the crowd in different formations. In some way, his rigorous categorization works against his metaphorical expressivity (the unfair impression of him would go something like, "the crowd is like rain, man, and there are four types of rain"); but really it's his categorization-that-is-ontology (that seems to deny historical specificity) that seems to hamper him the most.
