I actually listened to this book, and I don't know if that makes a difference, but it was really hard to keep listening to all that he went through as a POW. It was a very good book, and I think looking back at it, having heard this story will cause me to reflect differently in my life. My favorite quote from the book, and this isn't exact, but he said, "God makes himself unseen, so that he can know who sees him." I think that kind of sums up faith so perfectly - at least for me.

A good 3.5 stars. It was a little slow at first, but the story will stay with me.

Now I've insulted the holy trinity of sci-fi: Clarke, Asimov, and now Heinlein. Actually, Heinlein is my least favorite, as his prose is usually LESS than functional, his characters wooden, the dialogue chunky. Like the other two, it is partially how late I got into some of the classics. As a lad in the 60s, I might have loved his thrilling tales of space-faring; as a lad in 2005, it just seems very dated.

I devoured this book in a weekend. I have a toddler so that says A LOT. A light, delicious read and chock-full of terrific sounding recipes that I can't wait to start testing. Highly recommend!

It's great to get a general overview of history. Now I want to learn more about Cyrus of Persia and the late Roman Emperers.

** spoiler alert ** WOW!!! I love this feeling - this feeling that I only get when I've read a satisfying series of books - Dark Materials, Casa Dracula and the Sookie Stackhouse novels are also creating this wonderful stupor feeling of having fallen in love with the characters and truly admiring an original plot line. I have been held hostage in the Hunger Games world for the past week. I remember when I started reading the first book last Thursday that I would only manage to finish the book and who knows when I would get to the next one. Was I completely wrong when I rushed to the bookstore to get the sequels - I needed to know the whole story now! Which led to my after hours reading - long into the night because I just couldn't put the book down. Just when I thought I was heading to a good break, Suzanne Collins would thrown a word, a character, witty dialogue or some wonderful cliffhanger and I would be "OMG I can't stop reading!" What can I say? I've been in love with the Katniss-Peeta relationship form the very start, when Katniss described his goodness in sharing bread to her when she was literally on the verge of collapsing from hunger. How can you not love that story? But as the story unfolds, you just don't know how beautifully Collins is going to draw you into their journey together, into Katniss figuring out her love for him, where everyone knows it before she does. Peeta is just the most wonderful character, really throwing his life to protect her and showing a gift of words and camaraderie that is hard not to love. Gale... Gale is sweet, but as someone else said, Gale's purpose is just to be the good looking guy and he adds to the wonderful love triangle setting, where even though it's so obvious who Katniss should stay with, you just don't know because the whole book is unpredictable. The ending was yes satisfying, but couldn't the author had indulged the readers just a teensy bit and have created more than one paragraph to share Katniss's decision - seriously? At least one page???? There is an epilogue - but I wouldn't mind a whole other book between the ending and the epilogue - just on the relationship. Yes, I wouldn't mind.... I'm so happy that I read this book before the movie coming out next year - I have completely created my own version of the Hunger Games, but also very curious to see how this can be portrayed on film. These series are quite rare - I'm looking forward to enjoying more of these (Harry Potter is next :)

Catherine is a twelve year old girl whose little brother, David, has autism. On one hand she is fiercely protective of him but on the other, she is mortified when he does embarrassing things that could potentially mess up her relationships. She doesn't give her friends nearly enough credit in understanding about David, but she's been burned in the past. To help David be less embarassing, Catherine writes him rules about day-to-day life. No toys in the fish tank. It's ok to yell on the playground, but not during dinner. Over time, a lot of these rules are obviously more for Catherine than for David. Catherine's best friend is away is away for the summer and there's a new family moving in next door. Catherine has high hopes for her friendship with Kristi, but, like real life, not everything goes as she wished it would--and that's not necessarily a bad thing. When Catherine accompanies David to therapy, she meets Jason, who is in a wheel chair and can't talk. Jason has a book of cards with pictures and words that he points to in order to communicate. Catherine starts drawing him more cards, including nebulous concepts like "murky" and "unfair". Catherine again tries to balance fitting in with her "normal" friends and classmates, and her friendship with Jason. Jason was a really interesting character that continued to surprise me, and I wish we saw even more of him. One of my favorite parts of this book were when Catherine was trying to figure out what to draw for abstract ideas. My other favorite part was the struggle Catherine had in trying to be understanding of David, but feeling overshadowed by him in the family dynamic and needing her parents to sometimes focus exclusively on her. I think it was a very real, if not pretty, look at what it means to be in a family with someone who requires so much attention and energy. I also liked how, when David couldn't put his thoughts and feelings into words, would quote extensively from the Frog and Toad books by Lobel. It was heartbreaking and hilarious. My main quibble is with the ending-- it was overly tidy and neat while at the same time not really solving anything. It tarnished the rest of the wonderful book for me.

i started getting really confused. i admit i am new to world of fairy-tale retellings, but there seemed to be waay to many stories going on here. it was really hard for me to keep track of everyone, and because the voice of the story was kind of in keeping with older writings, and heavy on dialect, it was really hard for me to keep going. i hope to pick it up again when i'm in a more . . . place where i can take the time to piece together the stories. i gave up when the king midas part came up, and muddy annie - this is complex and needs a lot of time, which i just don't have right now.
