A very chiclit story, but still... I love it!

There's not much to say about this book that hasn't already been said in other reviews. Beautiful, lyrical, poetic - yes. Melancholy, tragic, heartbreaking - absolutely. Another one of those books in which I wept through the last few chapters, and felt as though I had been emptied of all emotion when I finished. But (like so many of the sad, sad stories I've read) worth every page. Her style of writing captures so perfectly the essence of being a child - the capitalization of words for emphasis (Airport Frock, Small Things, Infinite Joy), the sing-song sentences, the clear, penetrating logic of things - it's easy to imagine the book as pure stream-of-consciousness from the minds of Estha and Rahel...easy, and all the more heartbreaking because of this. This book is not uplifting or hopeful, and because of the backwards timeline, from the beginning you can imagine the horrible things that have happened (and you cringe as you turn the page, waiting for them to come), but it is, as Roy says, a Great Story. One that doesn't deceive with thrills or trick endings. One you have heard and want to hear again. The God of Small Things has earned a permanent place on my shelf, and like all Great Stories, I will cry every time I read it - and then I'll marvel at how great a story it is, and tuck it away until I read it again.

Whew what was with this woman? An incredible true story and I kept questioning why on earth she was there at all! Apparently she wrote two more after this one so I am very curious to see how the story truly ends.

I believe I was the only person in my high school english class you loved this book. It was required summer reading and I loved it so much I must have read it 4 or 5 times that summer.

The Plutonium Files by Eileen Welsome garnered her a Pulitzer Prize for its writing. This is a part of our country's history that so many people know very little about - yet it continues to impact us today. This book should be required reading by any Civics or history class studying the second world war and the Cold War. The interestingly applied approach to ethics during this time in history, which resulted in thousands of unsuspecting American citizens being injected with Plutonium, Uranium, and radionuclides without their knowledge or consent, leaves room for one to speculate about transparency at every level within the nuclear complex, and various decisions that have been made throughout the decades to push reactors beyond their prescribed levels, and to dispose of waste with such reckless disregard for human exposure and/or safety for the short-and-long term. The Plutonium Files puts a face on every human radiation experiment - which was declassified by President Clinton in the mid-1990's as he formed the Radiation Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments. Despite the importance of this event, our country was too busy watching OJ Simpson's speeding bronco to pay attention and educate themselves about the decades of human experimentation on U.S. citizens. If that isn't a wake up call in and of itself as to what we consider news - and what we should be paying attention to verses what we ARE paying attention to, I don't know what is. This book is GREAT reading, very well written, and very educational.

Seriously depressing. Much like Grave of the Fireflies, I don't even want to think about it.

This book is good when dealing with learning about the body. It not only discusses the parts of the body that they can physically see, but the parts on the inside and how we would be lost without them.
My Dad gave me this book the very first day I moved into college. I think he did this because he knew how nervous I would be. Yeah he was correct... I had a very rought A & B term my Freshman year with adjusting to WPI.
