Told in flashbacks, Henry, a widow in his 50's, recalls his WWII youth in Seattle's Chinatown. His parents sent intelligent 12 yr. old Henry to a "white" school, where he met Japanese-American Keiko, the only other non-white student, and friendship develops... The definition of "American" is an important theme. The author vividly describes life in war-time Seattle and internment camps. Descriptions of Seattle's rich black jazz history is a bonus. Henry and Keiko seem super mature and thoughtful for someone so young. I'm glad I read this, mainly for local detail.

Decent read with good info, although I would skip the kids version & read either the Supermarket one or the basic 2011 version--the topics covered are the same but I think they give more breadth & are most worth your time.

Another take on Arthurian legend, this time mostly following Guenevere's unusual early life raised by a former slave woman, a wolf turned man and a druid with Roman sympathies. A very dream-like style is used throughout. At its best this style seems part and parcel of the magical subject matter; at its worst it made me nearly lose the plot.

** spoiler alert ** torturous high school read. why any sane person would cut up their dick is absolutely beyond me. It is self mutilation and like female circumcism, it is utterly disgusting! Such things should never be inflicted on either gender, ever. And adults that choose to do it are nuts. period.
