this was MUCH better than DaVinci Code. It is a true page-turner and a GREAT beach read. Just a little awkward to read this in front of my conservative soon-to-be inlaws - i always tried to hide the cover.

Although there are strong parts, particularly the scenes that involved Hatsue, overall the writing of this book was overwrought and slow. Instead of gaining new perspectives on the same issue from different characters, every new character's view felt like a rehash of the same thing -- like beating a dead horse from every side possible. Some people have said that Guterson's writing is flowery and poetic. I guess that's one way to call it, but it lacked a sensuality to it that I generally associate with poetic. It felt like this book, all 450+ pages of it, was never edited. I have no problem with book length, but as always, it comes down to quality over quantity. The entire time I was reading this, I kept thinking that I'd rather be reading _To Kill A Mockingbird_. Basically, same story, better writing.

I've read a ton of backpacking books lately. This book is the shortest, and hits all of the major points. It's also more practical than the others. Trail Life or Beyond Backpacking are more wishy washy. This book is practical.

Recommended to me by a friend I admire. He told me it made him want to write. I am deeply touched by the passage where Blimunda attends the bullfight and watches as doves are released in the stadium. The birds have small pieces of paper tied to their feet, on the paper are bits of poetry. Some of the birds are caught in the stands and will be eaten by the peasants for dinner. But some doves fly above the crowd with the poetry and escape. Beautiful.

The third book of the Bride Quartet. I enjoyed it but not nearly as much as the first one. I did like it better than Bed of Roses. Laurel's character is fiesty. She doesn't take any crap and I love that about her. Dell is the perfect man for her. He can handle her temper and knows exactly how to deal with her. I wish they were discuss more about the weddings of Emma and Mac more but I hope that in the fourth book one of them actually gets married rather than just engaged.
