Theodoro Zanotto tzanotto — Although there are strong parts, particularly the scenes that involved Hatsue, overall the writing of this book was overwrought and slow. Instead of gaining new perspectives on the same issue from different characters, every new character's view felt like a rehash of the same thing -- like beating a dead horse from every side possible. Some people have said that Guterson's writing is flowery and poetic. I guess that's one way to call it, but it lacked a sensuality to it that I generally associate with poetic. It felt like this book, all 450+ pages of it, was never edited. I have no problem with book length, but as always, it comes down to quality over quantity. The entire time I was reading this, I kept thinking that I'd rather be reading _To Kill A Mockingbird_. Basically, same story, better writing.
