Taking language to that place where it is part sculpture, part music, part checkers: "If mud in a puddle makes it muddled, do kiddie pools become piddled?" Sometimes I can't decide if these are groaningly clever or wonderfully so: "If I'm too tired, am I a bike?" Some of are so fun I'm in love: "Does it take courage to make porridge in a village where bears forage?"

I read this book at a time when I was studying journalism, and didn't have a lot of time to read fiction. I was blown away by the sheer beauty of the author's prose; this is the book that got me reading novels again. It's a sad story of the Civil War, one that we don't often hear about - desertion, the nameless people left behind in the rural South, and above all, the struggle for survival. I'd recommend reading it before seeing the movie version (which I also liked, since it was more or less faithful to the novel, but I'm probably biased).

I loved this book. I thought it was very well written and overall a good story. Is the relationship between Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester ideal? No, but that doesn't mean the story is not enjoyable.

An amazing true story full of courage and faith. Makes me want to be a better person and to see the good in others.

Kingsley passes moral judgement on all the evils of his day, by means of Tom a chimney sweep who is transformed into a water baby. If you are interested in the Victorian period this offers plenty of insights about what was going on at the period and what people thought about it. As a story it is O.K but due to the casual racism towards the 'poor paddy's' and 'Negroes' it's not one to read to the kids. A curiosity.

I must admit, I could not finish this book. I gave it my usual rule with books - I gave it 100 pages, but could never get into the story, nor did I like the writing style.

This was not my favorite Jackson Brodie book, but I'm still hooked. When I start one of these books I cannot put them down until I am done. I think that it due to the skill of Atkinson's writing as well as wanting to find out what will become of Jackson and all of the characters who are sucked up into mystery. As always, there are events which come full circle, and there are story lines left hanging. This time there was a pretty big one, like who the kid actually belongs to and why no one goes looking for her. And I did not understand the involvement of the Tilly character. She had an awful lot of page time for an otherwise marginal character. Still I find the Brodie books and enjoyable read and look forward to more.

Maybe it was when I read it but it almost made me cry. (God forbid.) I still remember it and describe it as the quintessential tragedy of the American delusion/dream.
