Impressively researched and compellingly paced. And written with genuine literary flair. If you were ever curious what the daily tedious tasks necessary in order to survive trapped in the Arctic ice, battling starvation, scurvy, depression, hygiene - not to mention your own mortality, this will vividly bring it to life. Unfortunately Simmons should've ditched all the fantastical elements of the story and just kept it as a straight narrative of survival. It certain could stand on its own as that. The book is a bit bloated and the supernatural/folk myth portions of the story get a bit silly at points. Not to mention, ultimately disappointing = how some elements are narratively wrapped up. And although I'm sure the author personally isn't ... but there's a whiff of homophobia about the novel that I was mildly offended by. The over-the-top moral perversion of the 'homo villain mastermind' becomes increasingly unacceptable as things progress. It's debatable but that's my opinion. I don't regret reading it but it could've been tighter.

I read and really enjoyed Fall River Dreams: A Team's Quest for Glory, A Town's Search for Its Soul so decided to pick up this book to learn the rest of the story. A very honest look at how addictions can completely take over a life.

This is a fantastic book! I first read it as a teenager. I've since recommended it to my daughter. If you've ever seen the movie "Charley," it's based on this book...about a mentally retarded man who becomes smart...and how it changes him and the people around him. Very well written.

the author followed the stories of an iraqi girl and a young american marine during the recent iraq war. i found it a touching and thoughtful book. - of course an anti war message based on exemplary individual stories has its limitations.... but nevertheless, to me, he got his point across.

i read most of the middle of this book while smoking dope in a hammock on a beach of a small island in Thailand near the border w/Myanmar. i thought the book was about drugs and music, but other people tell it was DEEP and MEANINGFUL. i doubt that. the surreal shifting landscape appealled to me, especially when i was travelling myself. go to an airport in Hong Kong then wake up in Amsterdam wondering if distance is mere illusion. the book made consider how different the shape of an airplane's flight path is compared to the far more perfect parabolic flight of a rocket.

This was a light read. I enjoyed the settings in Brick Lane and Penzance and the details of Natasha's jewellery business. Some of the characters were a bit thin: what was Oli really like? How was he like her mother?

From the Publisher A bestseller when it was published in 1970 at the height of the Mexican-American civil rights movement, Chicano unfolds the fates and fortunes of the Sandoval family, who flee the chaos and poverty of the Mexican Revolution and begin life anew in the United States. Patriarch Hector Sandoval works the fields and struggles to provide for his family even as he faces discrimination and injustice. Of his children, only Pete Sandoval is able to create a brighter existence, at least for a time. But when Pete's daughter Mariana falls in love with David, an Anglo student, it sets in motion a clash of cultures. David refuses to marry Mariana, fearing the reaction of his family and friends. Mariana, pregnant with David's child, is trapped between two worlds and shunned by both because of the man she loves. The complications of their relationship speak volumes -- even today -- about the shifting sands of racial politics in America. In his foreword, award-winning author Rubén Martínez reflects on the historical significance of Chicano's initial publication and explores how cultural perceptions have changed since the story of the Sandoval family first appeared in print.
