I always seem to want to check out gay romances on the days that one homophobic librarian is there. This was a fun one to make him scan, but not as fun as When the Stars Come Out.

Ever wondered what it would be like to be a vampire bounty hunter? Alexandra Carlton knows. And being the baby girl of the family makes her job all the harder. She's tracking a vampire carrying a deadly virus that threatens vampires and humans alike. This is her first solo case, and she intends to prove she's as capable as her brothers—even if she has to work with a vampire enforcer to do it. After following a lead to Atlanta, Alex checks out the local vampire bars and meets Stefan Marin. He is a gorgeous, brooding, sex-on-a-stick vampire (aren't they all?), and she is drawn to him immediately. Despite the ten Rules of Engagement her family drilled into her head, she can't stop her growing attraction for the off-limits vampire. Stefan, having become bored with everything, decides life might be worth sticking around for after meeting Alex. As they work together to discover the identity of the rogue vampire, they can't keep their hands off each other. Within days and some mind-blowing sex, an incredible bond forms between them. The investigation continues. Alex and Stefan struggle to define their relationship, work with a hunky FBI agent (love those men in suits!), resolve dysfunctional vampire "family" issues, and still gather proof against the mastermind behind the deadly virus. Wow, that's a lot of obstacles to overcome! I love the premise of this story. An action-packed plot pulls the reader along on the hunt for the bad guy. The growing attraction and steamy sex keeps you pulling for Alex and Stefan. (Have a fire extinguisher nearby for the sex club scene!) I would have liked more background on Stefan and why he'd become so apathetic toward living. It might have helped me understand his debasing sexual encounter with his ex. That scene left me disappointed in Stefan. BORN TO BE WILD is an entertaining story. It just didn't resonate with me. This review originally written for The Romance Reviews. I've read this novel twice, and it only *just* got edged out by The Corrections as my favorite book of all time. Like Franzen's novel, this is one of those mystical "crossover" books -- great fun for both boy and girl readers. But while Franzen's writing is crystalline in quality and psycho-putrid in tone, Duncan's novel is, yes, a masterpiece, both in its style and in its ability to convey emotionally such a wide range of family successes and disappointments. It's some of the most inventive, artful contemporary prose I've ever encountered. I'm amazed that more people haven't read this book. Maybe because it tops out over 500 pages. But I wish it were longer. Did I mention it's a story about a baseball family? Maybe that will offset the length issue . . . not that you intrepid goodreaders are scared by length. I enjoyed all of Hanff's books. They are not long, but fun to read. The Movie of,'84, Charing Cross Road', was well done. Sorry the book store is gone would have loved to have seen it someday.

Very sweet. I'm not usually a fan of love triangles, and this one was pleasantly not a love triangle at all. It was sad, but not overly so. The characters were wonderful, and I felt like they were real people.

Author Joan Didion's emotional memoir (recommended by my grad school friends Angela Hill and Megan Kelty) documents the worst holiday season any individual can have: her daughter goes into septic shock and placed in an induced coma days before Christmas; then her husband suffers a fatal coronary and dies a few days later on the day before New Year's Eve. (In all seriousness, she must of had one hell of a New Year's resolution after all that.) If you're looking for swift read about life lessons and inspiration from tragedy, this is not the book. Didion's opus is about as stirring as finding out you're about to receive a half-million dollars because your mother or father just died. It is, however, a very honest portrayal of the human condition and coping with mortality, grief, and self-worth.

Rich in moody detail and poignant situations, a lovely book.

What an impact 90 pages can carry! Spare, stripped, and sterile prose leaving the reader to use his/her own intellect and imagination to fill in what this Japanese family experienced in the internment camps. Great book for students to read....will lead them to do more questioning, more research, more reading on the subject.
