Oh my goodness, I'd forgotten how much I loved this book when I was nine. It gave me the guts to beg my mother to let me pierce my ears like Mallory did. I loved the part where they all exchange earrings and they all have cool, personalized themes to them. I miss being a preteen and feeling like I could genuinely express myself with what was dangling from my earlobes. On reread, I mostly realize that the Ann M. Martin books tower above all of the ghostwritten ones in quality, style, everything. I don't think it's any coincidence that when I was a kid, my interest in the BSC dwindled right along with Ann M. Martin's participation in the writing of the books. Also worth mentioning: the Arnold twins as portrayed on the cover of this book look like creepy alien children. This cover art has literally haunted me for twenty-two years. I still look at it and shudder.

I liked that this book was divided into sections for native or introduced birds and also had a chapter for urban & widespread birds. Just enough detail for a vacationer to quickly ID any bird seen.

Although I totally appreciated Wallace's sarcastic humor and keen sense of the absurd and ridiculous, I only got about 100 or so pages in before I had to quit. This was primarily because the book was due at the public library and I was unable to renew because of an apparently massive waiting list. Also partially because it's a really intense commitment what with it being over 1,000 pages and having several strange plots (the connection of which I didn't get nearly far enough to start figuring out) and a fairly large section of notes at the end. This is an interesting device, but one that is sometimes irritating to me, especially in this case because some of the "notes" go on for pages and pages, thus making them pretty much another section within the section you're currently reading. I did enjoy the writing style, though, and I'm sure I would have liked the plot development. I will definitely try this again when I have more time to devote to reading!

Driving through heavy fog it is impossible for her to stop. The accident kills the other woman. It was not her fault but nonetheless Isabelle is devastated. Not as devastated as she becomes when through the woman’s son she is drawn into the woman’s life and finds herself falling in love with her widowed husband. It sounds like a typical “chick-lit” love story, but this book has a bit of a difference. It explores what happens when an accident leads to the uncovering of all kinds of secrets.

This book had the potential to be a fascinating commentary on university life in the 2000's. Instead, it read like a modern version of Sodom and Gomorrah. The fictional Dupont University is like a parent's worst nightmare. It has zero intellectual vitality and is filled with slutty girls, disgusting drunk guys, jocks that are literally mentally challenged and some of the most cringe-worthy sex scenes you will ever read. It also describes Charlotte's "cool" roommate as getting "lost in the music" as she listens to the stereo in their dorm room. The ballad she is lost in? A song by Britney Spears. Come now.
