This was a charming book. Though it was written for children, it's a story that adults will enjoy as well, filled with history and even some (well-hidden) philosophy. It's a short book and an easy read. While I loved the story, I also enjoyed the little illustrations that pepper the margins of the book as well, like an illuminated manuscript. The book's out of print, but snatch it up if you see it at a used book sale. I'm glad I did.

I read this book before all the fuss about Obama really took off. I heard about it from a friend and then a member of my book group refused to read it because of his politics. Well, that was it--it was go time. I got the audio version so my kids could listen. I just was stunned. I just kept saying to my kids, "He's so smart. Listen, he can put sentences-no wait-entire coherent thoughts together!" I've read reviews that say they didn't take away anything about Obama's policies from this book. I think you get a clear picture. He's a man who knows Constitutional Law and values it. He believes in reaching out and working together, something he illustrates with examples from his days in the Illinois Legislature. And he's a realist, believing in gay rights, even though he himself may not believe in gay marriage. He was against the war Iraq at a time when it was politically very dangerous to take that stand. Yes, this book may be dry and the style a bit professorial. But that's who Barack is and The Audacity of Hope is his book. It gave me a glimpse of the person who went on to give an entire nation hope.

One of the best Teddy Roosevelt bios available. The lush specificity of the prose once Roosevelt goes on his Amazonian quest mirrors the tremendous insight into one of the greatest minds of his time. Not only do you get several lessons in ecology, you get what I believe to be a clear channel into the complexity of Roosevelt's character.

I liked this book, but I still haven't read a Jodi Picoult book that I liked as much as My Sister's Keeper. This book is written in typical Jodi Picoult fashion, with view points from all characters. The main character, Adam, has Asbergers and is portrayed in a very realistic manner. The diet and treatments that he undergoes are ones that I know real children with Asbergers have participated in. The descriptions of his behaviours are accurate as well. The storyline is an easy read, but I felt as if Jodi lost steam as the book continued. The book seemed too predictable to me, and is not one that I think will stay with me long term. I am, however, looking forward to reading her latest book, "Sing Me Home" as I heard that it is great.

I feel guilty giving this three stars. I am judging this against WDM's other books and not the YA world as a whole. It would probably be 4 stars if I hadn't already read Monster and Autobiography of My Dead Brother. The story is told mostly as a set of investigative interviews into a shooting perpetrated by Len. I found it dry in parts but the ending redeemed it. The journal of Len was brilliant writing. The word play had me laughing despite how seriously disturbed it was. I just had a hard time getting through the first interview of Cameron. Like the book Hate List, it depicts how adolescents react to bullying, misinterpret and ignore signs of emotional disturbance. It is a short, fast read likely to appeal to boys.

This book changed the way I think about the media, science, personal responsibility, risk, decision making--pretty much everything. More importantly, it gave me the knowledge to let go of irrational fear and opened the door to greater logical thinking. Quite literally, reading this book lifted a burden, or cloud, from my conscious mind. Trippy. And highly recommended.

I used to really love this book - now I've changed my mind. The biting sarcasm I used to find refreshing doesn't make up for Solanas' extreme transphobia (particularly in the form of her gross misconceptions about transwomen). I can get behind certain forms of "manhating" - as long as "men" are considered a chosen gender category, and not an essential or anatomical one.
