The Art of Innovation led me to 'Snow Crash'. I started reading it over the weekend and didn't want to put it down. It's very funny. For some reason, I latched onto this book. Maybe it's because it talks about the Metaverse. Recently, I got into Second Life (SL). I need to do a little bit of research to find out which came first. It talks about people building houses in the virtual world. I can see some similarities between the Metaverse that Neal Stephenson renders and the world of SL. I think this book has influenced a lot of people and companies. For example, the book talks about goggled into the virtual world through the vision apparatus, a goggle. Hm...Google sounds a lot like goggle. Was the book the source? I'm not a big fan of Sc-fi books, but once in a while a book like 'Snow Crash' proves to be readable. I've try William Gibson's 'Neomancer'. I didn't make the leap into it yet. Maybe it's too far out there for me to grasp. 'Snow Crash' seems very plausible. I remember, in my younger days, buying David Brin's 'Startide Rising' because it had a cool cover of the man and dolphin. Uplift series

Another stinker in the series. Sadly, while the writing is technically good, and the characters are amazing as always...the story is absolutely ludicrous. At first, you're willing to suspend believe because, hey, it's a book right? But as the story goes on, the characters make one ridiculous mistake after another that compiles to a point where their stupidity is completely out of character for them. Then, there's what the author does to one of the main characters...which, if you have become as attached to them as I have...will anger you to the point where the entire experience is ruined. Thankfully, this doesn't happen till the end of the book, but still...it was unnecessary.

This is the memoir of an American teaching in Japan, trying to cross those spoken and unspoken cultural boundaries. You will laugh out loud; you'll also be caught up in student and community lives as they work with their (often cluless) American teacher.

it was okay...it would have been a zillion times better with no bad words!

I really don't get it. How can anyone think this is great. How can anyone think of this man as one of the greatest modern writers? This is terrible. This is the book: A man drinks A man sleeps with some ladies A man is yelling at someone And over again. And how could he ever get all these women in the first place? I think some people see something in Bukowski I just don't. To me this is amateur hour.

I loved this book when I read it my sophomore year of high school for its themes, and I fell in love with the characters of Atticus and Scout. This year, I read the book in an educational capacity with a young man with Asperger's Syndrome, a kind of high functioning autism. While he also enjoyed the moral themes and the character of Attitcus, especially Atticus's arguments at trial, he struggled with the subtlety of the dialogue driven plot, which I had never noticed. Though this made it more difficult to understand for him, I appreciated the way that Harper Lee delivered exposition and movement of the plot through the dialogue of her already well-developed characters. This choice made the book seem all the more genuine and engaging. In addition, on this reading I was struck by the richness of the setting Lee creates, a setting that is at once real and magical, foreign and familiar. In all respects, To Kill a Mockingbird is a nearly perfect book, and I am so glad that it reaches so many through so many public schools' curricula.

i was kind of surprised that i liked this, although i guess i shouldn't have been - i always dig a good quest tale. once you get part the ridiculous part about daemons and some of the plot loop holes like "isn't this girl 11?" it's pretty catching. the movie comes out in december and may or may not be related to a certain company i work for..

A classic, and a must read. As much as I love the movie (Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson), the book is even better.

Love these illustrations. A good gentle read aloud book. Any young child who has had a snow day will relate.
