_ichamdesigner
Hicham Raillani _ichamdesigner — I really don't get it. How can anyone think this is great. How can anyone think of this man as one of the greatest modern writers? This is terrible. This is the book: A man drinks A man sleeps with some ladies A man is yelling at someone And over again. And how could he ever get all these women in the first place? I think some people see something in Bukowski I just don't. To me this is amateur hour.

mrgrotey
Michael Grote mrgrotey — I was never hooked by this book. It wasn't boring or uninteresting; I just wasn't excited to read it. I think it may be because the series I read just prior to this book was huge, epic, and intense. Whatever the reason, I was a little let down that it wasn't as page-turning as Fablehaven. I WAS impressed with the concepts--key words, torture, getting stranded in a fantasy world, evil emperors, seed people, even all the monsters and side characters are interesting. I especially liked the prologue with Galloran being held captive and blind. The rest of the book wasn't as thrilling though. And I was a little let down by the fact that huge and complex problems were being responded to with kid-book emotions and kid-book depth. For example, a main character who is a teenager gets imprisoned, tortured, and starved. And yet, the whole time, this character is never desperate, takes things as they come, and never feels the whole range of emotions that are available to them. I guess I just wish this story had been told for a more grown up audience so that readers could really enjoy the whole story. It was good, but not as good as it could have been.

shaarpmindforum
Shaarpmind Forum shaarpmindforum — This book reinforced my previous experiences enjoying the genre of "participatory journalism." (The Know-It-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World anyone?) I learned more than I expected to and a lot more in depth than I expected about memory. It was a book that made me glad that I can highlight passages on my Kindle - something I don't often do. Beyond the nerdiness of the subject matter that I can appreciate, there were a lot of different components of this book that I think could make it appeal to a pretty wide, inquisitive audience. It made me think a lot about how I remember things, and, how I sometimes to tell my students ways to remember things. (Yes, I managed to think about my calc class and integrals while reading this book....it's time for summer!) I also learned a lot about the origins of memory - something I had never really considered before. I am admittedly not one that is much into history, but I found Foer's writing about the history of memory engaging enough to get into it - even the greek stuff, which I typically especially detest. I would recommend this book for anyone who's interest is peaked by reading the description on the back of the book. It was better than I expected.

guptapragya
Pragya Gupta guptapragya — Pretty sweet ass book for the first 100 pages, then lapses into surrealist-burroughsian insane homoerotic dream-like crazy shit. read it if you're into alternate-history fiction as well as pirate utopias and detective stories.
