It is really hard to explain why I enjoyed this book so much. It's a fictional account of an esteemed, older lawyer who "Failed In London, Tried Hong Kong," hence "FILTH." He was a "Raj orphan," a child who grew up in the U.K. with foster parents, then in boarding school, while his father worked in Malay(si)a. An entertaining look at that particular aspect of the British Empire and life in Britain during the war.

I cannot believe this pile of...I don't know what was written by the same man that gave the world The Great Gatsby. A series of overly-clever conversations and observational set-pieces almost making a plot, with bits of bad poetry scattered throughout does not a novel make. A pretentious waste of time.

I honestly felt that it was a little too long...good book otherwise. Not the best book I've read, but enough to keep me going.

Ok, I'm officially hooked on this series now, even though I need to read a number of other books prior to getting back to it. Brian was smart to release the first book in the series, Private free on Kindle to attract new fans like me. I recently read a few YA novels and was not that impressed. However, the Private series reminds me of the YA that I had difficulty finding to read when I was in junior high. There weren't many books out there like this at the time. Nevertheless, I'm glad to have found these small treasures now.

It’s a collection of 5 “fairy stories,” although that being said, this is the author who got the award of Number One Partypooper when she snubbed adults who like Harry Potter because it’s so simplistic and the motifs so obvious and the magic so un-numinous. Fair enough, but please. Antonia, we know you’re rivals with your author-sister, and you don’t need to do any literary name-dropping to impress us. But that’s what she does in the titular tale, as it is about a fifty-something stout English narratologist, Gillian, who unlocks a literal genie in a bottle. Since the protagonist has such a deep knowledge of story, it’s a great platform for Dame Antonia to fling about her scholarship. The thing is, I can’t be mad at her, since it was actually wonderful to google various names and authors I’d never heard of before. The stories themselves? They’re okay, not marvelous, but they get under your skin. One is about love that is choked before it can grow due to excessive pride on both sides, and it is tragic. One is about the “eldest princess” (since most tales are of the youngest) and it’s actually rather delightful since it is about living out your own story while still taking the old wisdom seriously. There’s a lot of shared motifs: the crone, the layering of time and generations, the mundane imbued with momentary shining significance.

I was a little apprehensive when I picked up 13, rue Thérèse by Elena Mauli Shapiro, due to the unique presentation of the book itself. Images of scanned photos, letters, and other ephemera are interspersed with the text, and on the last pages, there were special barcodes for use with a smartphone, which made me a bit wary. However, I decided to let it go and just take the book for what it was, and I’m glad I did. The book is strange and unique and yet, it’s also interesting and exciting. We briefly learn about a collection of items left for American professor Trevor Stratton, who has just arrived in Paris to translate French poetry. As the book progresses, he gets drawn into this story and people behind this “documentation,” as he calls the items, and you feel yourself drawn in as well. The story jumps between the Trevor’s perspective and that of Louise Brunet, the woman who owned the items Trevor is examining. The line between their worlds blurs more and more, and it helped to suspend disbelief, especially towards the end. I will say that I was a little disappointed with the ending, especially after the build-up along the way. It just didn’t feel like the resolution was as weighty as the story that got you there. That said, I really enjoyed the book, as it kept me wondering what piece of the puzzle might be revealed next.

Again much better than the movie. I think everyone has read this by now but it's interesting the way they incorporate real historical facts within this story and it's not a true story people!

Apparently you either love or hate this book, and because I've already read so many like it and the 13th tale as well, I fell into the second category. The book was loaned to a friend who usually likes the same books I like, and she has been struggling with it as well. She put it most succinctly: I can't stop rolling my eyes. The writing is easily read and obvious. The story is intriguing, though. If it was a movie of the week it would be on LifeTime Chanel, and I'd watch it.

Yes, it is possible. This book is even better than the first one. Stefan has finally decided that this was home, and immediately began to ensure that everything went well for Rand... and for the family. Lots of excitement including a rodeo, several trips to the hospital, and a family secret that really wasn't much of a secret. Highly recommended and this one is going on my 6-star-favorites shelf. ========================= 1st read - Oct 2, 2012 2nd read - Dec 12, 2015
