Nuno Silva nunosi — The Nosy Neighbor by Fern Michaels was a good book to read on the beach. (And such terrific weather did we have in Ocean City, let me tell you!) The plot...totally unbelievable. The lengthy dialogue was unimagineable. It was amazing that every character who showed up happened to be (a) really good looking (b) a really good cook and (c) exactly like what you thought he/she would be. There really were no surprises here. However, as I said, it was good for the beach.

Munkherdene R r_monkllo0bff0 — It’s a collection of 5 “fairy stories,” although that being said, this is the author who got the award of Number One Partypooper when she snubbed adults who like Harry Potter because it’s so simplistic and the motifs so obvious and the magic so un-numinous. Fair enough, but please. Antonia, we know you’re rivals with your author-sister, and you don’t need to do any literary name-dropping to impress us. But that’s what she does in the titular tale, as it is about a fifty-something stout English narratologist, Gillian, who unlocks a literal genie in a bottle. Since the protagonist has such a deep knowledge of story, it’s a great platform for Dame Antonia to fling about her scholarship. The thing is, I can’t be mad at her, since it was actually wonderful to google various names and authors I’d never heard of before. The stories themselves? They’re okay, not marvelous, but they get under your skin. One is about love that is choked before it can grow due to excessive pride on both sides, and it is tragic. One is about the “eldest princess” (since most tales are of the youngest) and it’s actually rather delightful since it is about living out your own story while still taking the old wisdom seriously. There’s a lot of shared motifs: the crone, the layering of time and generations, the mundane imbued with momentary shining significance.

I still think Katniss lacks some of the depth and insight I would have liked to see in her, but I was thrilled that she finally claimed a level of awareness and understanding at the end. Overall, this was a really satisfying end to the series. (Also, I have to admit, I've been "Team Peeta" since the beginning.) In this book, more than the others, I was struck by just how "American" the Capitol residents are. Even with their unhuman physical alterations, and maybe because of them, the residents exhibited the shallowness within our own society. Collins has done this in a way that is gentle rather than accusing, so we are forced to examine our own values and desires. Because aren't we all consumed by the "Bread and Circus" mentality? She artfully keeps us from feeling defensive as she holds the mirror up for us. I've been in a little withdrawal over the last 24 hours... I can't believe there's not another one to read now.
