This novel is the much acclaimed winner of the booker prize and the second novel from Anita Desai's daughter... Had high expectations for the book and was very excited initially, but in the end found it overall disappointing. The prose itself is beautifully written, and the book touches on many themes that are near and dear to me - colonialism, immigration, ethnic identity, class consciousness, consequences of the Indian diaspora, etc - and especially the story of Biju, an illegal immigrant to the US living in NY working in the underbelly of the restaurant world was very poignant. However, as a novel on the whole I was disappointed - felt character development was lacking and the ending left me feeling unsatisfied....

A good read. The story reinforces my belief that we need to increase our capacity for allowing immigrants to work in the US, even if they are here illegally now. It's the right thing to do, it would minimize the black market for transporting illegals across the border, and helps industries such as farming who rely on these workers to stay in business. The Spanish interspersed throught the book was a bonus.

I enjoyed this book better than her first, The 37th Hour. Characters were more developed and the storyline was flowed better.

When I have a daughter, I will read her these books. Scrumptious, hilarious, girl-power in the best possible way.

Ostensibly a book about a zombie outbreak (African rabies, it's called) that threatens to wipe out all of humanity and tempting to dismiss as some smug, ironic genre piece by the author of The Zombie Survival Guide aka Mel Brooks's kid (I think), in reality this is an incredibly entertaining and well crafted book about geopolitics. Told in the form of a series of oral interviews spanning the globe, the book focuses mainly on the actions of disparate countries in the wake of the outbreak which range from paranoid and xenophobic to logical and full of foresight. Brooks does a good job of analyzing what the likely incentives of each country would be during such a crisis and of writing in the voices of the various men and women being interviewed. At the same time, the book works really well as a cycle of interconnected short stories, some of which are very effective even removed the larger work. It's definitely worth reading, but I'd also highly recommend checking out the audiobook with people like Alan Alda, Henry Rollins and John Turturro (as a short tempered Cubano). Really good stuff.
