vitorguerreiro
Vítor Guerreiro vitorguerreiro — This was probably one of my favorite books i had ever read. The suspense and action kept you on the edge of your bed. It also surpassed my expectations. If you like suspense and action all packed into one book, Angels and Deamons is the book for you!

rafifsantoso
Rafif Santoso rafifsantoso — I'm ambivalent about this one. Perhaps it was the translation I was reading (I think I have the actual Der Tod in Venedig in the house somewhere, but frankly I couldn't face literary German at the moment), but I never really felt at ease when reading this. Not because of any of the themes that Mann tackled, or because of the denseness of the work; they were challenging and thought-provoking aspects, of course, but I found myself able to grapple with them. What unnerved me was the way in which all the protagonists seemed to be so utterly detached from society, while at the same time being so changed, so warped, so created by its conventions. I suppose this is in part because Mann was so heavily influenced by Nietzche, and I have really never liked Nietzche. There was no part of me which felt able to connect to the characters. Von Aschenbach in 'Death in Venice' left me unmoved; the eponymous Tonio Kroger did manage to move me, but only to the extent that I wanted to smack him over the head for his pretentiousness. When it comes down to style and elegance and observation, I can certainly appreciate Mann's achievement. I just can't like him as a writer.

portfoleo
David Bloom portfoleo — A bit slow going and quite dry (in the boring way) at times, but interesting nonetheless. I don't quite know for sure, but it's quite possible that this book came from a doctoral dissertation. Anyway, you'll learn a few interesting and disturbing things about Chernobyl, that's for damn sure.

_
Shir Evyoni _ — I'm very biased about this book because my dad, Joseph Peter Hoffman, was one of the forgotten 500. I'm so appreciative to Gregory Freeman for bringing this event to a potentially large audience. My father never spoke much about his experience, but we would hear more about it from the more vocal crew members that he kept in contact with throughout his life. His crew bailed out due to mechanical issues with their plane. One of his crewmates broke his leg during the landing, and he was carried by his crewmates to safety (many miles). These men were bonded with one another in ways that I will never understand. I had no idea the level of politics that was involved in this entire situation. The beginning of the book was heavy on this politics, but I understand how important it was to giving the rationale for why no one had ever heard about it. I would have enjoyed hearing more about the trials and tribulations of the 500. My father died a few months before this book was published. I only wish that it had come out a few years earlier.
