Look Me In The Eye was written by John Elder Robison. He has Asperger’s. Asperger’s is a form of autism, a very high functioning form. People with Asperger’s do well in life, some have very highly specialized intelligence, but they struggle with social norms and emotional cues from others. It was an interesting book because when John was growing up, Asperger’s was a diagnosis that was not well known. As a result, he was often mislabeled as a “sociopath” for certain behaviors, for example, not looking people in the eyes during a conversation. John also had a very chaotic home environment because of his crazy (literally) parents. I enjoyed the beginning of the book because of his logical manner in explaining his childhood and what he thought when he was a child was pretty fascinating. His mother would “pet” him and he really enjoyed that so he thought that is what he would need to do to make friends. Also he would give things his own name, like his brother: Snort his mother: Slave and his father: Stupid. I got a little bored as he got older. He went on tour with KISS, worked in the corporate world, and started his own business. He is fascinated with machines and computers, talents that enabled him to function in society without a high school degree. There was some language. Quote: “As I’ve gotten older, I have taught myself to act “normal.” I can do it well enough to fool the average person for a whole evening, maybe longer. But it all falls apart if I hear something that elicits a strong emotional reaction from me that is different from what people expect.”

If you like stories about secret civilizations, kidnappings, and perilous escapes you will enjoy this book. This book is about a two teenagers Will and Natalie who are caught in a a skiing accident, and are taken to a secret civilization where they must conform are be imprisoned. That's not all a great catastrophe is about to be fall this nation, who will survive and who will die? This book was hard read for me. It had a very slow beginning with small sections of entertainment. Some characters seemed to be to unrealistic but since they were minor characters it did not affect the book that much. The plot was very well developed, the author, Frank Acland, was able to show how a hidden nation is able to stay that way, while being able to become advanced. This is a very entertaining read, and is a good chose if you are tired of the same old stories of vampires.

His best work hands down. I read this while traveling around the middle east and gained a new appreciation for Islamic history. I know he can embellish a bit, but it's all for a good read. A fascinating time period, which comes alive under Smith's masterful touch. This may be one of the best pirate/privateer books on the market. The story spans years and feels very epic, much like a high fantasy book, except this takes place in our world. A vivid account of life at sea and the hardships experienced from voyages to the far side of the world.

Dean Karnazes is an inspiration and proves that all of us can do far more than we can imagine, especially when it comes to physical exertion/stamina. Completing the Western 100, finishing the first marathon to the South Pole, running across Death Valley in a 135-mile race, even his remarkable 199-mile run to Santa Cruz to prove to himself that it could be done . . . these are commendable. But perhaps the thing that found most remarkable is that Dean holds down a regular job, has a regular family and still manages to train for these incredible feats without disrupting the balance of things. (Admittedly, he does much of his running late at night, going for months on four hours sleep!) Another thing I found remarkable is his apparent modesty. Most of his co-workers did not even know about this training and racing because he would keep a regular work schedule and make a point not to complain despite fatigued muscles and depleted electrolytles. Good example for the rest of us who may gripe about a stubbed toe or paper cut. I read this in three sittings because it is both a compelling story and very well written/edited.

Interesting novel. Disturbing yet inspiring. Engaging characters. Good trumps evil, mostly. Recommend.

My husband and I read the trilogy and found the three books among the best we have ever read. The Lord of the Rings perfectly introduces the characters. Have read the books more than once because we loved them so much.

An interesting meandering account from Gloria Vanderbilt about her childhood, her husband and losing her son, Carter (Anderson Cooper's brother), to suicide.
