Mehhh... I only finished this because I forced myself to. It just never hooked me. Ever. There's some great potential but I think it somehow gets lost and doesn't work. Note to self for next time: it's ok to quit.

I wanted to like this novel so much more than I did. The writing is beautiful, but for the most part the characters and the story left me cold. The novel has some wonderful moments, and I did find Morrison's use of point of view interesting, but overall this was much less engaging than her best work (which, unfortunately, is most of the rest of her work).

This is one of my favorite books of poetry and one of the best books I've ever read about place.

If you were put off by "The Odyssey" in school give Robert Fagles' accessible translation a try. Bonus: seek out the audiotape version, narrated by Gandalf. Er, Ian McKellen.

I'm going to give this caution right at the beginning: If you're creeped out easily (like me) don't read this book. If you're creeped out easily and STILL decide to read this book, don't read it when it's dark outside (like me). Hey, they say you learn from other people's mistakes, right? Derik doesn't want to spend his life running the third generation family diner, but his grades won't get him into college. The last chance he has left is entering a film contest held by Reality TV on making a documentary and winning a summer internship. So, he gets a team of people who are pretty much polar opposites together and decides to break into the old abandoned asylum to film. He doesn't think anything will happen, that all the stories are myths. yet, strange stuff keeps happening, with this person who was there named Christine Belle. And, even after the trip - long after, even - nobody can forget the chilling effects of that one night. Project 17 is now one of my favorite books. Yes, it freaked me out. But still, it was written extremely well, so it was VERY believable. It's one o those books that when you're reading, you feel like you're right there, watching all the action. Told from all six teens point of views, you get all the action - including every person's thoughts. And with a hit of romance, where can you go wrong?

I have come to admire Lucy Kincaid, I don't know that I would be able to live through all the horrible things that she has had to. So now that I am done reading this book I have to say that I am glad that Lucy wasn't the person that was on the line. Does that mean that she escaped unscathed, no, it is just that her hurts this time around are more emotional than physical. Lucy is still trying to navigate her new relationship with Sean, which is not made any easier with Patrick's very obvious disapproval. Lucy also hears back from the FBI and things aren't looking good there. And all she can think of is all the crappy things that have happened in her life, the baggage that it brought, and how it is once again destroying her life. Sean manages to break through the wall Lucy is putting up by pulling her into the case he is working on. This case is right up Lucy's alley. As the chase down the missing girl they end up in New York, right in the path of a task force between the FBI and the NYPD. Knocked off her game Lucy sometimes doesn't listen to her instincts, but still is able to give more help than the task force has gotten in months. Little by little Lucy gets back into the swing of things and becomes an integral player. While bouncing ideas off a friend at the FBI she gets some great advice both on the case and about her application. Both of these allow her move forward to figure out the bad guy and what her next move will be. What I really liked about this book is the relationships. We have Lucy and Sean. They both are surprising honest with themselves which allows their actions to speak what they can't at times. Sean always seems to know what Lucy needs often before she does and is willing to step back and let her be. I also really like the sibling relationship between Lucy and Patrick. They have such a special relationship from past tragedies, so when they are fighting it seems to hit harder. And Sean and Patrick, it is hard enough when you are friends and then start to work together, harder still when one starts to date the others sister.

I thought his blend of psychology and philosophy was interesting, and the writing was simple and engaging, but I don't have time right now to focus on the book. Will get back to it someday.

I had issue with this book. It's focus was primarily on the future of American cities in the coming 40 years, hypothesizing the existence of a few "Superstar" cities working in tandem with formerly rural areas that have been urbanized to support the growing population of the United States. This future population Kotkin speaks of is 400 Million. While I'm not arguing with his theses pertaining to how America's positive growth rate could be the one thing that saves the country from potential decline, as Europe and Japan are faced with negative rates and China teeters on potential disaster due to the combination of the One Child policy in tandem with a disproportionate number of males to females. What I'm arguing with is his belief that the American suburb will reinvent itself in a way that doesn't deal with cars. The idea that Middle America will suddenly become a land of flourishing cities, reliant on cars with minimal emphasis on mass transit, is highly unlikely. Had Kotkin brought this issue up instead of brushing it aside in a single paragraph, I'd have ranked this book higher. It's discusion of the ethnic forecasts for the country in the next 40 years were insightful, as were his discussion on trends in age and cultural attitudes. I just couldn't get past the idea of a major city in the middle of North Dakota. (That's not to say that the 52x income disparity in my beloved NYC isn't criminal)
