I HATED this book with a passion. I know this is supposed to be the greatest coming-of-age book of all time and how many lives it's supposedly changed, but to me, Holden Caulfield was a whiny little bitch who needed to get a life and get over himself. I was so sick of his complaining each and every time he went somewhere else. Stop going out, then! Seriously, I had a hard time finishing it and an even harder time still talking to the people in my life who always raved about it.

This workbook is really useful for anyone who wants to practice mindfulness and distress tolerance. My friend Carol trains foster care workers in DBT at her job in upstate NY. 10/9/11 - I haven't read the whole book cover to cover yet, but I know I will refer to it time and again. A truly excellent workbook for changing negative thought patterns.

I could have done without the afterword by John Zerzan. Primitivists writing the closing thoughts on a fictionalized account of labor strike, anti-police brutality demonstration, a riot, a bombing and the legal aftermath and wrongful imprisonment and execution of anarchist labor oranizers... turns my stomach.

This was a fun read. Which voice is speaking? What era am I in? There was plenty to keep my busy little mind occupied. This was not the predictable mystery that I have solved by the time the characters are introduced. I'll definitely watch for more my Joy Shayne Laughter.

Parts of this book were really interesting and informative - and incredibly relevant today, even though it was originally written in 1981. If anything, the world has gotten more materialistic and chaotic, the environment more damaged, and the gap between rich and poor more prevalent. Clearly, the priorities of our culture are misplaced. Things are not working, and it's time for embracing a simpler, less selfish lifestyle. Unfortunately, this wasn't a practical how-to manual. It felt very hippie-commune, pie-in-the-sky theoretical...everybody has to find their own path, etc. The writing, particularly the made-up words ("unsatisfactoriness"??) distracted from the flow. Also, the original survey (from 1977) in the back of the book made me realize how far we've come as a society. Under "Race," the choices were "White," "Black," and "Brown." Wow. Still looking for a better 100-Thing Challenge and practical solutions for how to resist our materialistic culture. Any recommendations?
