"Man or Mango" was nominated for the Orange Prize for Fiction. This was a quirky, clever, little novel about some rather unique characters. The book is riddled with lists, letters, and poetry created by the characters. The author's black comedy made it an entertaining read, but it may not be for everyone.

The book didn't really interest me much until about 3/4 of the way through it. Then the end was not as satisfying as I thought. I really like closure at the end of the books I read! Good subject matter though.

Reading this like a novel right now. Just finished Alma. Started it two weeks ago. It is taking on a whole new life and way more appreciation. I am actually into the stories, which I can honestly say has never happend. Fabulous

this book sort of floated by like a piece of flotsam. the protagonist is Miles Heller, a compelling enough character, but the problem is that this book is written entirely in a "telling" rather than "showing" style, so that the mystique of this character is somewhat dulled by his being labeled by the author as mysterious. much of the text works through allusion to other works - The Great Gatsby is one, as well as a World War II film, The Best Years of Our Lives - and these parts felt a little forced, as well as the parts when Auster is describing a subject through the eyes of an interested character. for example, Ellen's examination of the human body feels like it was written by a college freshman. the rest, however, is all acute character study, and the pacing was pleasant and constant. I did enjoy reading this, but did not feel it had a significant impact or weight.

What the hell. I read and read and read about his stupid trial and I guess I missed the punchline. What the hell happened! Is that the point? I did enjoy the suspense... Ugh.

I didn't give this four stars because of its literary quality. I gave this four stars because it's just an enjoyable, fun, light read. Sam is dying to be popular. She thinks opportunity knocks when Kyle, the "it girl" in school moves next door. But Kylie wants nothing to do with her. But Sam persists and therefore finds out Kylie's secret to popularity. A second skin. Slip it on and suddenly everyone notices you. So Sam steals the skin from Kylie and now it's her turn to be popular. Somewhat predictable... okay very predictable plot... but still a lot of fun.
